Pittsburgh Last Night
Pittsburgh where I grew up
Five persons killed by two others
Using guns for the sole purpose
Of murder
The victims
Hoping without conscious
Thought to take part in the
Open—a backyard festivity
Homiest of parties
Home belief destroyed
Celebration as a cause
Never believed in again
Debates will go on
Who cares
The sides were answered
Yesterday
Talk is over when bullets
Tear through people
Debate done

This poem is great, because it describes something gruesome that needs to be paid more attention to. You are right, it seems those in the US go around and around talking about gun laws and their ‘right to bare arms’ but then yet another three people die from gunshot wounds and people don’t understand, “talk is all over/ when bullets shoot through people.” You think that would be enough, but I guess some lives aren’t worth it. That’s what this poem seems to be getting across to me. To politicians, to guns right activists — lives of the victims don’t matter. Well done and a a sad awful topic too 😦

Thank you especially for your insights. You sum up the issue–which has literally fatal aspects–just right. Why that’s not always first on the table, that this is a deal that kills, and then acted upon I do not understand.

*sigh* *deeper sigh*
Such an unfortunate event. Humans do love to kill each other. Before, through war. Now it’s through guns (and just this week a mom and her 1 year old child were hammered to death here in the Philippines).
It’s just horrible and the worst part is the killings are getting worst! Like there is no conscience left anymore. *sigh*
This line, Christopher, says it all: “Talk is over when bullets Tear through people”.

Thank you for citing that, Rosema. If I were a legislator, the truth of that would be enough to get me to act. It does seem as if there is a cheapening of life going on. Why cannot we globally agree that life is first and all else must serve that?

I don’t know. That is something no one can answer. Which is sad.

In the long road of making more money, there will be no room to find the true worth and value of life.

You’re right. Money and power–the pursuits devalue life one by one. Sometimes many by many.
