The Circle Will
Jesus loves me, this I know
For the Bible tells me so
All of Christian theology in a
Capsule, so I’m told
And I can believe it
Little ones to him belong
Who said he will not suffer fools
It was not Jesus
He welcomed the small, the foolish,
And the outcast
I take great comfort from his
Company
And so might you
They are weak, but he is strong
Is there strength in doubt
In cynical insight—if
So, then I might qualify for
Divine companionship
To marvel in the one who
Walks beside me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
One more time, and the spell is cast
It becomes official
He has pledged some kind of
Fidelity to me
Because an invocation counts
So much so we give it once a week
That, like the bath on Saturday,
We take it, needing one or not
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so
Ancient lore
Interpretation of the text
Desert mothers and our fathers
Keepers of oldest insight
Dry seeds in small packages
Waiting for young water
What will be our next song, children
Maybe about fittin’ Jericho
Or whether or not we know we
Smile
Songs go back to truth,
Which is why it’s clever when
We can sing all the verses
Time for reading now
And later there’ll be play
It’s a good day in God’s land
However many rainy days
Or rungs to climb
It takes to get there

Neat piece Christopher, interesting to weave together a well-known children’s song with your thoughts. I enjoyed it and as usual your pieces are thought provoking.
When I used to teach or assist with VBS one I loved watching the kids do went something like: “My God is so big, so strong and so might pay. There’s nothing my God cannot do (repeat once more). The mountains are his, the rivers are his, the stars are his handywork too. My God is so big so strong and so mighty there’s nothing my God cannot do.”
I think the kids enthusiasm and the actions they did with this song was so humeros to watch but the words were very effective for the kids. Since God is so big, he can defeat and protect them from their problems, the bullies, and mean people in their life too. In the same way as “Yes Jesus Libes Me” These children’s songs all say we are not alone, children or adults, and indeed, we are worthy, loved, and have the hope of the hereafter too.
Hope you are doing well Christopher. That you’re feeling better & your migraines have improved. Crossing my fingers you get that surgery you need soon too, if that helps you to feel better and do more physically and mentally. Always happy to see your work here. Cheers

Thanks, Amanda, for your response and your good wishes. Sometimes there’s liturgy in unreligious (unLatin) places. Though you’re right about Church School (a good place to hear new words or new ways with old words). Songs are such a good part of that experience, and children’s songs have joy and strength.
You know, I hadn’t been thinking of my surgery, the one that got cancelled due to weather. I do feel sick, and I guess I should go through with it. (Drat.)
I hope your health is good, that you are on the better side of all your challenges. Be easy this week!

I shouldn’t have reminded you, surgery is never good. But if it helps you feel better and have better days, I hope it’s something you can have and heal over soon. Maybe soon enough to enjoy more of the outside and those type of activities? Or get a young to middle-aged trained rescued dog? I think we could both use one.
I’m doing pretty good, Spring/Summer is often better. Also, he med I’m on is supposed to heal your brain over the years, this is year three and I truly believe each year it has done more and more. To my utter shock and thankfulness to God.
My friends would say I’m more resilient too. Plus, being able to do a shift of work 6 to 8 hrs, that’s pretty amazing. I try not to think about setbacks, it happened once before, but I stay positive. As long as I can sleep well that’s half the battle. I’m sure with you too.
Take care my friend 🙂

Loved these words the most !!!
What will be our next song, children
Maybe about fittin’ Jericho
Or whether or not we know we
Smile

Thank you so much for noting these! Songs teach us, I guess I believe. Plus they are a great way to receive a story. I hope you are very well!

Yes, songs have been a medium for passing information since ages. And even now a song can teach us so much. Glad to have this conversation here. See you more Friend. Have a great week ahead 🙂
