She shares with us how it is, and I hope she is persisting.
I wonder is racism okay, until it doesn’t kill someone?
Is it okay if it just makes you cry at 3 a.m because you felt so ugly and humiliated as anyone refused to sit next to you because they find you appalling because of your complexion and don’t find you enough to be friends with?
Is it okay if it just makes you question about your worth day in and out?
Is it okay if it gets you removed outta a play because the heroine needs to fair and lovely and not dusky and ugly?
Is it okay if the lead actress for a dusky character had to get herself painted so that she can look dusky enough because either the industry doesn’t have enough dusky heroines or they prefer a fair-skinned over the one who actually is dusky, defying the whole purpose of the film?
I wonder is it…

I hope she’s persisting too. Thank you for sharing this. I wonder why people feel one complexion is inherently better than another. During my travels, I encountered Indian people in Singapore who said they wanted to marry someone lighter skinned than themselves so their children would be lighter skinned. In South Korea and in China, people cover themselves head to toe when they go out in the sun to keep their skin fair, and even get skin bleaching done. Why? I love all the colors and diversity of the world. I am white, but I used to love to go out sunbathing to get darker. I always thought darker skin was more beautiful than my pasty-white freckled skin.
Our world needs to stop judging people by the color of their skin. It is a meaningless characteristic. Except in the case where people are persecuted and abused because of it. When people mistakenly assume they are better than others because of their color, it takes on an abhorrent meaning, one of suppression and abusive power.

Thank you, Cathy. I don’t get it. Skin color is not an accomplish, certain procedures notwithstanding. It’s what we have. It’s interesting. It’s not a criterion. I’m used to my skin color (and the freckles) and find it a treat to encounter those whose skin color is not mine. You with your travels have seen the good and bad in people of so many colors.
Racism, following the belief that one race is superior, is not only wrong but also evil. No fooling. The world is wonderful with races and one race of many colors. Time we got that.

Skin color is certainly not an accomplishment, neither should it be a detriment. I agree, it is evil to think that one race is superior to another. Look at Nazi Germany, and so many other racial cleansings and genocides the world over. It is way past time we understood that.
