It Doesn’t Toll for Thee
Wrong people get the message
Wrong ones think they’ve
Wronged—
Things are so awful,
What did we do?
Those who ask typically deserve
Nothing of an answer, for
Nothing did they wrong
God does not wring the faithful,
Even if grayed
Might be the faith
Those who have worse-wronged
The people and the planet
Rarely ask after
What they’ve done
Or realize the reckoning is for them
While the faithful, like
Lazarus,
Own paradises, now

Actions have consequences. Beware.

I like this especially, Christopher: “God does not wring the faithful, / Even if grayed / Might be the faith.” We all do wrong, yet some of us feel bad about our wrongdoing, about the havoc we wreak. Others, often the worst offenders, don’t seem to care about the destruction they cause. Rarely do they even think of a reckoning, while the wrongdoers, even with their withered and gray faith, with sorrow for what they’ve done, maybe they have a chance for paradise. Interesting thoughts, as always. 🙂

Thank you, Cathy. Yes, we all do wrong; and at the very least we all make mistakes. But too often those who really need to hear the message, because their actions aren’t only their own but affect many others, don’t hear the better word. More often than not because they don’t want to hear about consequences, too busy investing in exploitation.
Those who know right and wrong and want to do right but aren’t going to be perfect–well, I think these folk are okay and I sympathize with them. Cracks in faith, doubts and such, along with mistakes don’t have to ruin anyone. Sometimes mistakes have bigger consequences, but that has to be okay. And it is.
Whew, stepping down from the box now.

It’s so much to think about, for sure. 🙂

Quite thought inducing. 👌🏾

Thank you! I simply got to thinking about those hearing correction who don’t need it (who wonder how bad they are, when they’re not bad at all) and those not hearing correction who need it.

Deep and true words, brother. Your poems leak so much of wisdom and depth.
these lines are hauntingly real:
Those who have worse-wronged
The people and the planet
Rarely ask after
What they’ve done

Sister, thank you. You’ve highlighted a difficult part because I think it’s true in life and in our world.
