cool be cool
and it’s a lovely day
(to
love)
an irony
of gray
though we can remember blue
while we enjoy the cool
the low dewpoint
mid-August
while we’ve been keeping
record heat
until
today
and thank you
to
the God of gray
(to
love)
who brings
the clouds
and maybe spritzes of rain
to shine the leaves
that have
been looking up
and out
with us
for some relief
(to
love)
from all reliance
on machines
for cool
now
let’s
be cool
(to
love)

Remember August
Starts in gold
And ends
Overlapping
With the wind
x
The next month is seven
Prior for the emperor
Who never was
And was the first
x
Ten months
And we have twelve
The ones we know
Who count the calendar
Finally
The pope’s way
x
But each month
Has a treasure
In its story
x
This month starts in gold
And ends with
Windy promises
In these parts
Of autumn
x
Unique
What happens
In your days
Divide them up
And celebrate
The units
In your month
And what I hope is your
Many-monthed story

Bad Summer
(sorry)
x
My summer
Began in surgery
I’ve been trying
To rise
Ever since
Not the first time
Or the last
(I’ll have battery replacements
at the least)
But this was unexpected
I tried to follow
Protocol
A ride in an ambulance
(I’ve received a bill)
And everything
Successful
I suppose
But the days have been heavy
Since
Heat and humidity
And climate change
Of course
(of course, it’s real)
Storms
And word of storms
And everywhere there’s war
Or natural fire
Fire
Flood
Thirst
And disease
x
I know
I can’t make all burdens
My burden
And I pray for these
And mine
And hope each day
To be a little
Well
Lighter
Lighter steps
Easier breathing
In the practical
And meditative
Way
x
And now it’s August
Fall is on its way
I hear

Doggone Dog-Here Dog Days
x
Dog days
For dogs
Cat days are every day
To cats
Winter might have dog days
But the famous days are
Summer
When it’s late
And there are days of heat
And humidity
When dogs are famous for
Lying down,
Stretched out on boards
Of Southern porches
While the humans
Sip up lemonade
And talk
About the weather
x
n.b. for humans
x
Keep water close by
And bring them in from
The heat
When you go in
Keeping in mind
That they’re your friends
And mine

August on Deck
(easy greetings)
x
It’s Friday
Anticipate a weekend
Late summer
Final trip before the school year
Work at home
Clean at home
Leave the home
For the park
For stores
For church
Find company
Leave company
Hours on one’s own
The quiet might invite
x
Or out into the world
A different way
A drive, a walk
To nowhere in particular
A new nowhere
Untried
Something heard of
Or an inviting opening
A path into
Some inviting part of the world
Keep safe
Why not
x
After the anthem,
Play ball

I look at this
I can smell the stalks, the petals
Memory, I suppose
