Too Good a Day

(not really)

x

Blue and green

And black and brown,

All in their places

It’s a grand day—

Pretty as a picture,

Some might say,

Though I think it goes

The other way around;

The dust-bunnies

Could come out

To play except that

I would see them,

Which is the drawback:

The sun is good upon

The rugs, and I can see

Everything I should

Be picking up

What do I want

To say to you

That it’s a lovely day

In an eccentric way

Everything is played down

The takeover of fall

Changing tones on trees

And on the ground

Everything played down

Under a graying sky

With brighter sunlight

Coming through

From time to time

As if the wind

(I see it on the leaves)

Were pushing the clouds out

Or the sunlight in

A Race for Prophecy

The headaches have decreased

Somewhat

There’s a band of pain around my head,

But it is less severe

Shall I tell you of all my other pains,

Maybe adding sad stories as I go?

No, you’ve borne with enough so far, and I

Am grateful

It is a blue day outside and on the tress

The last of summer green

Now is the race for colder air, the kind that

Will render brilliance to the dying leaves

Before the new season earns its

Name

And on the ground a greater mass of

Wilted monochrome than the riot in diversity

I and so many cherish

The markers of the season have

Arrived:

Cold rain, color in the leaves

Paradox in brilliance dying

It’s in our lore;

It’s why we conflagrate the phoenix

A Climate Change

A Climate Change

(an issue in iambic)

We had rain yesterday

The kind of rain that soaks

Into the ground that that needs it

It’s still too warm for autumn

But the wind, I think,

Is trying to be cold

There is some color in the leaves

The brilliance in their own tradition

Hasn’t happened

The days we want to call crisp

As in Frostiana,

Which is persistent, begs a fire

Inside or in a ring at camp

Life in the north, I know

The south of Earth doesn’t have to care

I think it does

Within days, autumn arrives

My favorite time because

It is cool

I mean, it’s hip, I guess

Though mainly it’s cool

Not frigid

Not torrid

Afire (without heat) in

A gift of color

In the south of south,

Fall will be spring

The warmer path to summer

Turning Time

Turning Time

It’s late in October, isn’t it

The season soon enough will be half over

No other season calls to itself so much

In northern parts at least, everything to say

We’re done for now

Cover us and let us rest

Autumnal residents

October people

Unrelative Truthing

Unrelative Truthing

Even in dim pre-dawn light

On a Sunday morning,

The colors are clear

Finally, it’s fall

The leaves are turning into glory

And should one think there is a subtext

About the beauty of all races

Well, that’s not really there

But, now I think of it,

Why not

There is beauty in all races

No need to place that truth under

Something else

Now, fall’s late arrival

Something of a pattern

Might also beg

The warming of the planet

Let’s go with that one, too

It’s not progress to have that understanding

(though another kind of progress is the cost)

It’s the kind of sense

The ancients have employed

Coffee’s ready

Time to get it

I am thankful

I hope your day is good

And for your neighbor

the law of glory

the law of glory

who made autumn glorious?

a final, phoenix flourish before winter

who gave the colors

then must take them back

it is a way

with the discipline of divinity, I guess

I was not asked

I’d make it color all year round,

which would tyrannize the summer

and relegate winter sameness

to memory’s dust-catch

good that I’m not creator, then

I’d hash the seasons

(even in the south it would not be safe)

lose the patterns

for

remaking life in temperate parts

year-round

I’d wreck the year

and then we’d need a

God to save

when rescue is enough

most every day

quiet my reckoning, then

keep the seasons in-between as they are

let peace prevail in middlin’-parts

for better reasons
