ev’ry time
the Spirit of God moved
and there was
water
then a world
and God lives in each one
of
us
as we allow
fearful
creator God
yet also living inside
in
intimacy
which is the part of God
that should amaze
and
does sometimes in songs and
testimony
many and great
O God
are thy works
as
in the hand
that
planetwide presses out plains and
valleys with mountain ranges
rising
between fingers
and yet
God indwells
all
who want
and closely forever
which must be one of those
many
and great works
and is

The Ascent
Creation
Foundation
Re-creation
What remains the same
What changes
We cycle through
We break the cycles
Or they’re broken
For us
Inventions all around
Adaptations
Also what is newly made
With materials of Earth
Sometimes of us
The controversy
What might we interject
Though we haven’t changed a generation
On our own
Except in that
We have more things
Sometimes for more time
And then fill the time with
Pursuits
Playful
Progressive
Or vainglorious
Are we stages
Phases
Headed toward a final place
A seeing place
A hearing place
A place to touch
And on
Which could be battlefield
Or a launching platform
To meet divinity’s wider hand
As we are
Able
Having chosen virtues
Carefully
And as a better planet’s people
A world
That we made better
Also
Maybe first
In
And of ourselves

How heavy
Is God’s hand?
Quarks and canyons,
Oceans
And neutrinos
Cosmic and subatomic
Creation and
Creating
x
God is clumsy,
And a ridge
Is formed missing the
Mountain top
Designed;

God sneezes—there’s
A platypus

God can be funny about
Making things;
When
We get there,
We might receive requests
To teach
The angels humor
Based on
All our
Earth experience

The Originals
We create and re-create
We must do this,
I think
The way animals return
To reproduce
It’s close work and
Intimate
Actions in a studio
Or on the line
What might tragedy encourage
Into making
Or a comedy?
I’m not saying it’s a law
It’s not
Sometimes a commission
Even patronage
Sometimes, though, merely
A happy accident,
As is said but really happens
Call it invention
Or an invention
Making and remaking
What is made a complement
And compliment
To a living and a breathing
Sometimes fierce, sometimes
Fanciful
Planet Earth
With places in the cosmos
When we’re ready
Though we’ll probably
Leave too soon
To find the faces
That have been
Quietly challenging
Wizening with age
Maybe waiting
For the far more mortal
Upstart young
To launch
To find our way to you

“Painting the Summer”
Born Ready
There are two
Quite often
And some more
We work in company
Best of all,
It seems
I guess we’re made that way
Porous, with no corners
But with openings
Ready in the making
To receive
Atomic intentions
Molecules that move
From skin to skin
One by one
We each remain intact
But space and matter have
Determined
All the places on
Each one of us that
Are ready to receive
Like sponge to sponge
Life like water
Fuller for the moving
And arriving
Tidal pools that live
Along the shore
Of every cosmic
And each metaphoric
Ocean

L is for Lyric
Will you sing with me?
If I start,
If you start,
Shall we sing together?
The earth spins off harmony,
A jubilance of sparks—
Fireworks
In the mind
Our words become song
And, while orbiting,
An invitation:
Into our creating cups,
Ambrosia-better,
Liquid inspiration
Not for drinking but for
Utterance,
Music becoming
Current in the cosmos
