Mischief Day

x

So far, it’s been

A disorienting day

When I just miss the counter’s edge

Or don’t

When I spill something

Then spill it again

When I can’t keep a lock

Out of my eye

x

I imagine I’ll be stubbing toes

Missing the finale

Locating many things

But what I need

Tomorrow will be Hallowe’en

Maybe the veils are thinning out already

And someone let

The imps through first

When we grew up, there was Devil’s Night, the night before Hallowe’en.  I understand it’s Mischief Night as well.

I hope it’s

A good day

You might be at dawn or

Well into tomorrow,

However the sun

And moon

Are moving

One place or another

On the world

x

Our count of day

Is relative,

While the actual

Ebb and flow

Of tides and

Of day and night

Move in

Real relationship

Without

Our measure—that’s

The way it is

x

And it is good

As I’m hoping for

Your day

To be

Or, in the uncounting

Time of Genesis,

Become

Night Is Gracious

x

I can’t think of what

I deserve

Because I deserve nothing

Too well I understand

(with Protestants)

The wages of sin,

Not

Because I’m criminal but

Because I’m sinful,

Maybe in the way

Of all who’ve sinned and so

Deserve extinction

x

But sinful state and actions

Might be

A prelude unto grace—and so

Some say there must

Be evil on the way,

And I wonder

x

They don’t really go by halves,

And shadows are not evil

Evil isn’t natural

Though insistent

And when we think

The evil life is

Shadow life—they don’t combine,

Not really

Decide what you will

x

Let evil sublimate for now

But shadows can delight

At night

Or teaching about night

In day

x

In daylight we’ll have Parousia,

I suppose

Thought at night perhaps

We’ll celebrate,

Then rest

The rest we should have had

In Eden,

Now a rest

For all to merge

To bathe of goodness,

Leaving all distinct

Forever

x

Each one a player and a part

(not the player without

an upstart part,

as Jaques laments

an irony of stasis)

In everything revealed

By light, by shade

All shades of existence

x

Under the sun

(evil abrogated)

While always under stars

Belonging to night,

Where we also

Always

All belong

Wishing, and There’s a Horse

x

It’s as if

The lower clouds

Muffle the sounds we make

Below

I don’t know if that’s the physics of it

Or simply a sensation

Only on the inside

A guess and a conclusion,

Based on wishful thinking

I hope it’s a good day for you

You deserve it

And it’s time

Because for now

(barring time travel

like the stories’)

Everything is forward,

And I want a forward day for you

Where is

All the opportunity

The Tell

The Tell

x

Another dark day

Good for hiding dust

No doubt the motes are flying, still

Informing the dust bunnies

Where to warren

Why not dust cats or

Dust crocodiles, I do not know

But we may delight

In invisible inhabitants,

All the same

The pixies that our cultures tell us

Do and don’t exist

The magic inside

Each of our stories, especially

Once shared

x

Pull up some chairs, the four of us

Let’s play some cards

And, please, let’s talk

It isn’t tourney play, you know

Let’s show something of

Ourselves besides

The tells

We don’t think we have

Halcyon

Halcyon

It’s a beautiful day

Sometimes, I guess, that’s it

Outside

Everything allies to make it

Grand

Bright blue sky, punctuated with

Big balls of cloud

Yellow light is playing on

Green branches

The brown trunks look gussied up

For square dancing

With their partners

Once the night has fallen

And there are no humans watching

James Weldon Johnson might approve

It’s a day for Aesop

Or for Tolkien

Mary Oliver

Or Gerald May

Or anyone who has a porch

With chairs and a pitcher

Of the family favorite

(we won’t judge)

At night in June

There should be fireflies

And we’re allowed to watch them dance

While other things are secret

(see above)

Tree-Thinking

Tree-Thinking

There are trees

Blues between the branches

Angled yellow lights

Slicing shadows

Day’s possibilities

At night,

The shadows, you know, will be longer

Sky’s light will change to silver

Trees will seem rougher

And the buildings,

Though they’re not

The night has

Possibilities

Remembering

Not the daytime but its own

Check, Please

Check, Please

It’s a lovely day outside

The sky could be a little bluer

I’ll have to ask when

Ordering tomorrow

And you, what would you like?

Maybe some rain

For thirsty fauna

Or something zephyrous,

A blessing in a breeze

And since it’s you, I’m happy

To be countermanded

Order what you

Think is best

Around

Around

You should have a good day

You deserve it

If it’s not today,

Keep it

In your pocket

Or your bag

Then pick a day

To bring out when you need it

Saying to yourself,

This is a good day for me

And there should be enough

For someone else

Share it

If only a wish

For that one to have

A good day, too
