Bittersweet remembrance

As we have

Of all

Remembrance

This of my dog

Our dog

The family dog

From years ago

I used to take him

To the creek

Way out back

Behind the neighborhood

I’d let him run

Through rocks and water

(all was shallow)

He was free

And yet he stayed

With me

There was an incident

With some cows

Imagine the same patched colors

On the bovines

And himself

But came back

Under the fence

And through the water

And the rocks

Once again

But tempers reigned

Among the humans

And I left

I did not see Ralph again

Getting old and sick

As we do

Weighed down by disappointments

Maybe

As we have

Yet I remember liveliness

The chain leash upon the hook

(irony

for freedom)

That I pulled

Only a little

And from wherever

Ralph came running

Knowing it was time

To go out

And run some more

Speaking Simply

x

Who holds the tap

On grace

Like backyard water

Miserly barmaster

Rain

For life

On hanging gardens

x

Why

No one

Keeps grace tight

Or somehow

Unavailable

Do not let anyone

Inform you

x

Grace is free

We need to say this

While the only one who holds it

Lets it go

To pour upon the Earth

xxxxxLike rain or dew

xxxxxOr faithful tears

With salvation

Near

And all we have to do is to touch

To hear

To take it in

x

Let no one bill you

Teach you anything extreme

For expectation

God might like to use you

But will not

Should you ask for distance

Space

And time

x

The vulnerable should come to God

The children

God appeals

It’s open

No money or affiliation

Must change hands

x

The strong

Or strong supposed

May come to God as well

Those who like to lift things

Move things around

Or have them moved

Or who wish

In frustration

They

You

Were movers

x

God will take

The complexity of plans

xxxxxGod can handle

And would handle for you

While you learn

The simple

And profound

And the merely simple

Like the love of God

Be love

For every person

x

Love without measure

Meaning

Complete

For nothing

Everything

Lean

(x = space)

x

x

Lean

(John 3:17)

x

Not to condemn

But to love

Because God would rather love

And does love

It is gravity

The universe is biased toward

That which keeps us together

And God is biased

In the same way

x

Everything is biased

Everything leans

The one who can be objective

Best

Who maybe sets objectivity

Aside for math

(maybe)

Has chosen to favor

The impulse of creation

And an agenda

Toward ourselves

x

God would rather save than condemn

Would rather love than judge

Who will judge

And do so with perfection

Also to pardon

With a possibility

Faith required

Faith in something freely offered

Grace

The sacrifice made by another

Who was God

Who is God

That in the mixture of flesh and the divine

Blood and spirit

Sin and innocence

Might conquer death

And offer conquered death

As proffered life

The chance to live in hope today with

As the song asserts

Bright hope for tomorrow

x

Perfection chooses

Love’s mitigation

Case dismissed

Open the gates

Or however admission

Might be managed

Into heaven

And for now

Into today

today is Father’s Day in the USA, and I wish happiness for fathers; since I have no earthly Father anymore (and for some time) and got to thinking about tomorrow; and not stopping in thinking about tomorrow, I offer this

tomorrow is Juneteenth

tomorrow is Juneteenth

when in Texas slaves

no longer slaves

and who were never slaves

by the will

that was creation

nonetheless are told

they are no longer slaves

and by legislation

for two years

or so

x

you are free

but they knew that

they knew there was an enemy

that kept them down

that weighed the legs and feet

upon stolen ground

to earn crops

for another’s coffer

(boxes in the bank)

they knew

they would rise

they knew this sometimes

on occasion

while chains and fields

and white men’s whips

beat another message

upon backs

of backs and faces

on the legs

that did the work

that carried wealth

to a master

who was not a master

or an owner

but for thieving

against God

and integrity

who cared not for blood

that spilled on blossoms

as long as they looked white

in the sacks

x

such evil

Lord

and why did you allow it

why is our will

so important

that we are enabled

to grab weapons

to split human hides

to take the rest from Africa

stuffed like oranges

in ships

to the infantile

and erstwhile

USA

and late give up the practice

through a war

a reckoning

for what all of us knew

was wrong

was evil

x

we cannot imagine

who were not there

though at least

we may tell stories

and send messages

through generations

to the future

x

do not do this again

live a kind of sorry

if need be

and if recompense

be needed

well them

pay it

from those boxes

of the profiteers

whose gold inside

still shines

still funds

still mocks

the rest of us

for color

and all colors

x

let freedom ring

we hear

well

let it ring

ring bells

ring all we have

that makes a message

and response

with decibels as words

that say

yes freedom

we must have it

we must try it

we must make it known

to all the Earth

and all the worlds beyond

and all the worlds

that are inside

and all the worlds

that we must share

Brittney Griner

x

I’m glad she’s back

Aren’t you?

Return the others, please—and

We should say

You may have your own

x

We don’t like each other now

Except maybe in passing

On the street

On the subway

In the store

Real people

Real person to real person

We pick each other up

In small ways all the time

x

More real than politics

That makes a war

Forgets the real people

But counts numbers

Of them

Plays them on a map

And in a mortal dream

Of conquest,

Acquisition

To rationalize

Before the rest

Of temporal authority

That needs speeches

Bites for press releases

Justifying

All those people

In the street

And the street

No longer,

Well,

No longer there

Picking up each other

That we no longer do

Because we were made numbers

Then like gum on penciled math

The strategy erased

Grace Is Free

x

You tell me the process

That lets out grace

Into the world

I can’t begin to say

Because it is not up to me

While my knowledge says

It’s free and freely given

By one who could

Have charged a lot

Rather made it free

Who releases grace

No one but one

Who does not keep it in a jar

To be dispensed with tickets

Shining and uncornered

But ready through unnailed openings

To give it without reason

Save for an abiding, relentless

Always hoping interest

In love and salvation

Grace is free

It’s freedom

Sometimes

Often, maybe

We wish for dispensers

Push a coin into a

Machine that has moving parts

But no electricity

And no computer parts

x

And receive

Something colorful and wonderful

Call it sweet

(call it sugar)

Call it grace

x

Grace for a quarter

(I know, it might have been

a penny)

Or something else

Dispensed

To save us for

A little while

x

A coin for a bit of doctrine

Except it might be heresy

Grace for a coin?

That is a coin too much

Unkept Doctrine

Unkept Doctrine

(and unkempt)

I’ve been meaning to

Write about grace

The kind that is

Free

That no one can hold onto

That has no rules except

To help ‘til heroes return

Like crumpling a butterfly

In a human hand,

It doesn’t

Mean so much if you try

To clutch it

Or claim at all it’s yours

It isn’t yours

And can’t be claimed by anyone

Don’t try

Enjoy the benefit

In a sunshine of surprise

Don’t polish it

Or ever, every try

To keep it on a shelf

It has no rules that we’re aware of

Someone, yes,

Not us

To those who want to market it,

You’ll learn, if you have to

Then be forgotten

It’s as if grace has a contract

Somewhere,

Chaotically enforced

When someone tries

To own it

The rest of us

Will bask, when we never thought

We’d have the chance

To breathe at all

Again

And where dreams are

Bound and

Bound to

Bound to be

Freed

Be,

Be free,

Marahuyo means

(To be) enchanted

And marahuyo

Means

Are magic
