Life Out There

Life Out There

We can only imagine ourselves in space

Place ourselves there

Somehow the blackness would be air to breathe

The planets reading lights

With far-flung stars become the neighborhood

With home a house made out of gravity

Some kind of place we might deserve

Among the stars

Planetoids might greet us, once again

(Pluto’s back)

Asteroids carry our messages

Faster words in comet-tails’

Skywriting

For something faster, send a meteor

But I think, when balanced right,

Dark matter will tell us all

We need to know, between each other

The Big Quiet

The Big Quiet

Was everything else

Set here first

Slathered on by gravity

By passes and twirls

Of heat and carbon

Round an axis circling a

Toddler sun

Looking for a place to stay

Bending away

From solar majesty

The attendance who wants

Some sovereignty if

Only in degrees

Something presses in the middle

Like clay inside a fist

And round and round

Flow minerals

Red and black turns of

Earth that

Slip-slide curved, over and

Under

Until there is a kind of magnetism

From constitution

Settling, not settling

And over which

Into

Water arrives

And after managing an arrangement

Between the land and sea,

It’s time for seething

Into untoward life

Tomorrow there’s be more

For now, it’s just a cell or two

That impulses into

The world

And now will rest to take a breath

Throughout the darkness spell

For now it is decreed

A night and day

Cat People

Cat People

I don’t know why we like

To change or stay the same

Is it up to us

As a campaign?—when

Burdened, yes, when

Abused of

Our better parts and

Aspirations

(Or maybe because we bug the

Hell out

Of those around

Us, and they’re right)

Otherwise, doesn’t the universe

Offer instinct-movement in

Gravity

And the attraction or, admittedly,

Repulsion of

Black holes and

Neutron stars?

And all the turning elements

That ask of us to

Dance if possible with joy,

Day by day,

(And anyway)

With all the nuclei?

Like felines who jump across

The yard or run the

House

Because they can

Because the gods of catliness

Say cats must—

And don’t they want to!
