Cat News in Mews

Cat News in Mews

(not meaning stables except I guess as places for cat-gossip)

In a recent study

It was on the news today

Arch researching

(not unlike the cats indifferent

arch that is a pose, I’m sure) Found that

Cats can hear us

They know our names

They simply choose

To ignore us

This is news?

We know our cats know us

We count on it

As they on us

It’s a round-robin game

(sparing the robin)

The supplicants of Bastet

Could inform you

And all the rats on ships

Certainly, they know their names

But what is in the mind

Are silent cues

Scripted by a

God who loves them both

The felines and their victims

Cycles for the ages

Worthy of praise

Like Christopher Smart’s cat Jeoffry

Who will, I’m sure, not hear daily

Anything else

Sensate

Sensate

I hope you hear me, God

Beneath the words

Not that they don’t matter,

Because they do

And there is accountability for

Them

But in grace there is a filter

Not in people

But in the perfection of

Your senses

And your astounding biases toward love

While I cannot expect forgiveness

From the world,

I can count on you

Not for escape from responsibility

But for a way to learn

To keep it

And to live it

My soul’s protection does not have to be

On the line

Or if it is, not paramount

There are your ensuring promises

But there is the day-to-day,

My life on this side

I am not kept out like

The match girl,

Though I might share her fate one day

Yet I think you will open me

To bring me in

Where are warmth and companionship

Sustenance from heaven’s hand

Give me a chance

To hear and then to act

With those of us who

Wait for you

One way and the other

Old Poodle

Old Poodle

Old Poodle’s rather useless,

Like his step-brother also

Old beyond his breed’s

Allowance

But none too bright with too

Shrill a bark—fine with him,

Since his hearing’s hard

Looking to command him

Is a whimsical try, for he

Has cataracts thus can ignore

Any words he doesn’t want

To see

I think Old Poodle likes things

This way—no expectation

Presses, while his interests

(Not surprising, is it?) take

Away all other precedence

After all, anything not sensed

Can become preeminent

Useless, loud Old Poodle is a

Dear—‘til God wants him, we

Want him here

Psalm 22, a song about God calling

Psalm 22
a song about God calling

Did you ask me something,
Lord—and did I not hear?
How do I know it’s you
Speaking (when no one
Else is in the room) and
Not the voice of another

Or simply my invention?—I
Hope I apprehend when
You might speak, especially
When you have something
To tell me to do

You would not ask of me
Destructive or demented
Activity. Then, Lord, and
Anytime, let me do
What you request, even
When I might (guaranteed)
Hear imperfectly from you.
