to the doctor’s well

a doctor type at

the clinic where my

heart failure’s diagnosed

and worked on

blood pressure’s up due

to medication or

some other cause

there’s all the weight from

fluid that is uncomfortable

to feel but since it tends

to kill people by

some kind of drowning I

guess then I should be

grateful and you

know I am

today is

someone’s day

or something’s

thanks to

greeting cards

or causes that simply

want a day

and get authority

to say okay

pizza day

beagle day

greeting card day

with greeting cards

for greeting cards

a day for me

is groundhog day

because there

are no cards

so you can cross

out christmas

or new year’s

or presaged a dismal

valentine’s

and write greetings

from

Punxsutawney

over that

and so practice

Groundhog didn’t like the late April snow (she was in the middle of nest building when it hit).

Our Days

Our Days

x

Yesterday was

Ocean Day

And also many people

Many of them

Students

Wore orange not for

Protestants

But for an end

To violence

By guns,

The bullets inside

Guns

x

Two days ago

Was D-Day

When by the thousands

Soldiers landed

To take back

France from Hitler

And the rest of

Europe on

Which he had

Had his eye

And after a year

Of slogging

In a blood-soaked way

Town by town

Bridge by bridge

Europe

Was restored

If Germany divided

Days for marking–we

Have so

Many now

With added reasons

Each cause

And each remembrance

Just

And exigent

Even the silly,

Days for doughnuts

And cat breeds

We need the breaks

Sometimes we need

The money

Come from

Merchandising

x

Sometimes we

Simply want the break

An excuse for

Chocolate

Or for ice cream

For a ball game

A parade

x

A walk

A conversation

Or simply

To stop

And think about things

Differently for

A while

How We Ate

How We Ate

x

Somehow,

We had turkey

On Thanksgiving and on

Christmas though not at any

Other time of year,

Not even from the deli

We had ham at Easter

Corned beef and cabbage on

Saint Patrick’s Day

Pork and sauerkraut for New Year’s

Cheeseburgers and fries,

Holiday cookies on

Christmas Eve

On Valentine’s my mother would make

And serve a two-later, pink

Heart-shaped cake

Speaking of cake, the Easter cake

Was made into the shape of

A bunny with coconut

For fur

With cardboard ears

The insides colored pink

With the carnation crayon,

Then all laid upon a grass of green-

Dyed coconut with jelly beans

Scattered in the grass

My brother Rick taking black jelly-beans

To place behind the bunny’s butt,

Which aggravated my mother

Every year

That was family holiday food

I could be missing something

We ate well

Better and better,

I’m thinking each year

Holidazing

It’s a tarnish day outside

But I hope you have

A good day

You deserve it

For weathering in every way

The season

(in Australia, it goes to

the other way)

You are being careful, I am sure

With tasks and news

What needs doing

What can wait

And silence in between

When you might

Enjoy the stillness

Like untouched snow

On a hill

Before the sledding noise

Takes over,

Which like Currier and Ives

Will bear

Its own bliss
