Speak for a Nation

Receiving a message from the Lord

was rare in those days; revelatory

visions were infrequent.

Prophets have jobs

Usually doing something else

Until the words are called for,

Until the wind

Blows through

Every atom

We think of them as crazy,

But they’re not

There is relentless urgency

Is all

Repent, while you’re alive

Don’t wait for judgment

And the fire

Leaders, most of all

You are double-cursed

If you do it wrong

Return to the temple

Pray in litany

And all humility

For a change and

For a change,

Recovering the modesty

In service that dressed you

Before fame

x

We think they’re crazy, sometimes

Maybe they are

From time to time

But there is authenticity

And love of service,

Such as those in stadiums

At podiums

Behind the microphones

Must have

Judgment on a House of One

Judgment on a House of One

And Herod appeared

Before the crowd

In an arena in Judea, to

Proclaim himself

Messiah to the Jews

And to the world

He wore a splendid robe

Of silver

How it must have shone in

The sun

And then

Herod fell

And soon he died

Wasting disease,

At the last

Consumed by worms inside

That, hungered, had their way

Without

As well

How ugly and how awful

That must have been

Against the silver

And is this how it is

With those who think they are

In charge

Know how to lead

Must be resplendent at it

In a hided-over ego

And in other, badged ways

Over vainglorious skin?

Leaders, supposed, self-styled, or

Otherwise

Even the right ones

Will be judged twice over

Once upon themselves

A second time for those they built up

Or sent away

Or from whom they

Took away small pieces, one piece

By one,

‘Til for the company there was

Little left

But victim service

We might not see this, hear it,

Taste the mortal defeat

Touch the dust they have become

There is a reason why

In older times, the judge was

Called

And is

Immortal, invisible

Only wise

(the death of Herod Agrippa is told in the Christian Acts of the Apostles and other ancient sources

it is fictively told in the chapters of I, Claudius by Robert Graves)

I should be judged, too, on whom and how I led, when I have led

Venezuela

Venezuela

Who knew

Who pays attention

Largest oil reserve in (within)

The world, and all of it these

Days for less than naught

Oil prices are low, and leaders

Of oil-supply can’t cooperate

So while I pay less to fill my

Car’s tank with gasoline for

Which (I’m sorry) I’m grateful

Those who live in another

Part of America are starved

Out of sugar and flour for

The day and even toilet paper

We can laugh for what we

Throw over trees, which only

Makes a nervous joke out

Of excess

It’s complex, for I need

Cheaper fuel for the car—I

Need cheaper for everything,

Such is the life of the older

And disabled and, at best,

Partially employed

But, generally, I can get sugar

When I need it, and the other

Things

I have access to help

And I am not a nation living

Not Venezuela

Without
