gifted
I’d like to give you each
a present
though I’m poor
and not the kind of poverty
that saints admire
for I have little
mystic understanding
and what I have
is tied
to nothing like
how much
how little
I have
I’d like to say
go slowly
as the Buddhists
say
especially
when parting
I’d like to say
remember all your loves
made up of
reason
practicality
and balance
not that passion
doesn’t count
it does
but there should be a measure
in most things
of what is right
and what is easy
(like
Jack’s pieces
well
maybe not so much)
which is
(really)
to say
let all good things
have their place
and do not rearrange
from the heaven
of creation
and the philosophy
inside all things made
for there is
certainty
as well as confusion
the way this world works
and don’t deny
the sure things
that you
and others
who are smart
and might be trusted
might ally
I’d like to say
think God
(like another movie)
though I know
that’s not enough
or I could say
love
and let love
not frilly silly
(‘til the day)
but steady
and trustworthy
have its say
and guide
however trite it sounds
each day
I guess
some things are cliché
like the way we use
iconic
meaning not a symbol
but celebrity
believe
and love
so common
(a cliché)
and yet maybe
we can still ourselves
and our sophistications
to accept
that some things
important things
the most important things
are commonplace
no secrets
no requirements
but to accept
what is instilled
(installed
as it were)
within internal palaces
or offices
or bungalows
(I’ll take a wooded cabin)
in the mind
in what we call the heart
in what really is
the spirit
might be
an alliance of the spirits
one by one
within
between
our groups
our nations
for an errant world
on its quest
our quest
to grow
to acquire
and to save
good things
and we could have rituals
and easiness
(not mindlessness)
in what passes
from the Earth of now
into
the next
of now

Talking and Walking
x
Now talk to God
At last
Waiting
With all respect
Withholding judgment
‘Til we’ve had a word
x
This is right
And this is wrong
And I guess
I knew that
Though not always
The particulars
x
Who can see
All consequences
x
And I have other questions
That I mean
Less rhetorical
x
How do I do it all
How do I bring it home
Really
How do I live free will
And obey things
All together
x
How do I think
And love
How do I formulate
A plan for life
Then wait for its
Dissolution
x
How do I say
This is good
And this is not
When complex understanding
Mixes everything
x
How do I live
In this old world
The human part
That has such hate
And hides its greed
Inside an
Annihilative plan
That is at work
So far from me
With those who have
Stolen the riches
Of the planet
And seek to dupe
All malleable
And thinking people
x
Where is the love
Inside the hate
And how do I live
With both
x
That is
How do I live with who I am
Who I was made
Like everyone
To be
And to be
Well
Me
x
How I live
Lord
I do not know
Too many exits
Or rest stops on the way
They are inviting
Too many paths
It seems
Narrow and wide
And in-between
x
Which way
x
The world is too complex
For the simplicity of love
And faith
Maybe of hope
As well
x
I clang my cymbal
Except I don’t
I live in quiet
Desperation
Sometimes
With the age
Also frustration
Remaking tiny parts
Of my world
To say
That’s better
There is hope for the rest
x
And is there
x
The world made by you
We are in your image
To look like
Dare I ask
To act like you
x
Are our actions
Part of our likeness
In your image
x
We make things
I guess
We destroy them
Too
And you have ordered things
Destroyed
x
Nothing lasts that we make
And is it practice
Then
As in
This all being a rehearsal
For the real show
That is
The real experience
To come
x
I should add question marks
For grammar
Though there are so many
Plus implied
And beyond me
And I think you know
Where are the pauses
Where I do take a breath
Before the next
Thing
That I wonder
You are patient
Except when you’re impatient
x
Well
Maybe love is complex
Too
Or maybe its simplicity
Weaves through the complex
Showing a tapestry
In wisdom
Or in time
Your time
For all to know
x
Who knows
While we live
And wait on Earth
What secrets
You might keep
Or is there a real truth
That you keep none
x
Love and faith and hope
There are precedents
And these might be lasting
One link into another
Through the ages
And tomorrow
And in next moments
After this
Amen

Good Time, I Hope
x
God
May I talk
With you
x
My health might be improving
Just a little
By just a little
And I thank you
In part because
I want to make a lot
Out of a little
x
I want to ask your pardon
For my sins
Though really
I want to assume
Upon a doctrine
Not to have to talk them out
Remember things
With you
x
Or again assume
You know them
Anyway
And will excuse me
On my asking
Even broadly
x
Clearly
By tone
I think I’m wrong in that
x
But for your pardon
Even with my fractured approach
I thank you
And I love you
Have I mentioned that
x
I feel confused
About what’s next
x
I mean
I know there’s heaven
Though I don’t know
Heaven
But honestly I mean now
The now that I know
As best I know
And what to do
I don’t mean tired questions
Lived for decades
Without answers
I could grasp
x
I mean today
And for a little direction
Into tomorrow
x
Could you help me out
If I’m feeling better
With a little better-ness
What shall I do
x
Keep healing
I suppose
Try to bear
And wear
Virtue a little closer
Then to
Try to be positive
And send positive
All the while
x
That is
Maybe for a change
Keep doing this
x
Now
It seems
I hope
I hope I found a little something
This time
That had been piecemeal
Over time
And now should be
Seamed together
For a broader cloth
You might accept
For a flag
Or coverlet
Or on the table
Where we gather
To remember
And negotiate
Earth
Or
Eternity
x
You’ve been listening
Over years
You have been listening
I’m thankful
x
Even in pain
Your presence
For my life
Since when there’s void
There is too much
To bear
x
Well
Thank you
Lord
I’ll keep working
As it is
And feeling
Of your presence
More than doctrine
In my life

All verse is for you
Food
For ingesting
Water
For the thirst
You maybe did not know
You had to have
Me

All to have
In being

Sigh
Let’s love
Love
And make it practical
I’ll carry this for you
You could make something
For me
x
Keep it civil
Better courteous
Keep respect
For remembrance
In our heads
Our chests
Wherever better spirits
Dwell
x
And sing for love
Upon our stages
Certainly
Inside our homes
And in any congress
We might have
Outside

Love Who What When Where and Why
(maybe you write about the How)
x
Like water
Love works
On everything
Though heaven
Weeping angels know
We try
To resist
To act as if
Hate were strong
Or acquisition
Better
x
We fight
And war
And ask amiss
Try to take
In fact
Without any asking
x
Sigh
Would relenting
Be so bad
It’s there
It persists
It takes
Maybe the problem is
It takes some
Too
x
Does hate do better
Greed improve
A refusal to surrender
Anything
While we believe that grasping
Has its way
x
We believe that love is weak
That is an ego-problem
Like fat
Round babies
Into angels
(thank you, Renaissance)
We miss the majesty
Deny the awful quality
As in filled with awe
Of love
x
The love that sires
Prophets
The pervasive strength
In their messages
x
That births
That follows us to die
When it is time
Sometimes in service
Or in sacrifice
x
Can one own so much
To give it all
There is nothing that is stronger
More impressive
Move over
Avarice
There’s something much more potent
That begins with one
And then with two
And then with three for family
x
The family of Earth
Nature providing
All the elements available
We don’t even have to war for it
Though we might need
A treaty
Like the covenants
x
Or let love be wild
A little
Let it pervade in forest
Observations
To let the group
Even the crowd
Break out in love
To celebrate
To show
Who is the real boss of us
And who would rather be allied
Than
Love mercenary
Ruled
x
For all affiliations
Love means freedom
It means energy
As Blake says
An eternal delight
x
Love is pleasure
Certainly
It’s sex and power
And everything
To share
The tyranny of love
Better poets say is wrong
Release obsession
As all we want unloving
But the guise
Be let go
x
Let love be true
Mostly restrained
By day
Modest in its style
Until safely
We let go
Or in our modest ceremonies
Affirm it is the best
And through it
Know
That we belong

Love among the Ruins of the Nation
x
Oh
Gee
Let’s
Stop
Let’s love each other
In a real way
That could stop a war
From need
Of bids through Congress
Or parties
Lashing out
To topple strategies
Even the existence
Of
Each other
x
Punishing the dare
To compromise
x
Can you imagine
Love in Washington
D. C.
Love and then
Morality
To say
To say we argue
On our side
With angels
With drawn swords
x
Love instead
The red
The blue
The blue
The gray
The war we will not end
For equal living
Everywhere
x
Separate
But more equal
Come on
You know you believe
It is the essence
Of superiority
And you are
Superior
You know you are
As you are shameless
To the Lord
Whom you evade
By speaking loudly
To your party
That to your side
Deserves the spoils
After everything
Despoiled
x
Love among the ruins
Understood
For you
For us
Not romantically

Rather too late
Simply
Ruins

Sigh
It’s Friday morning
We’re told
The heat is crested
So low 90s today
Which still is hard
For those of us
From here
Above equators
(there are two
you know
tell Ecuador)
And the tropic lines
x
We’ll breathe into Saturday
Be grateful
When it rains
Maybe too much
But they will break
The drought
As well
x
And these are
My
And our
Issues
Over here
How is it where you are
How is your health
And your family
How is your neighborhood
And any community wider
You are
Or must be part of
x
I am perforce
American
Though America is huge
And we tend to take the name
And then apply it
To one part
x
You are French
Or Nigerian
Or Indian
Chinese
From idealized Tibet
From Ukraine
From Russia
x
You might be from the South
Or the Northwest
Or the Northeast
Maybe all the way up
(we say)
To Maine
Maybe you know
Or encounter at the supermarket
Stephen King
x
These are places
In the USA
In France
You have
The Côte d’Azur
In Greece
Santorini for an island
(that might have been the home
of Atlantis)
In Egypt
The upper Nile
Into Ethiopia
That was Nubia
In China
There’s the Gobi
The severest place on Earth
x
And there are the people
We are people
There
x
Inhabitants of the world
The team of Earth
One people
Now we’re leaving it
And shall need identity
x
Should we live in peace
Appreciating our diversity
All
The shapes and sizes
In our making
And our choosing
The lives we have
That is
The lives we make
x
And we should make them well
And have the freedom
To do so
Too direct
Too easy
Maybe
x
But too bad to be good
Sometimes it’s easy
Put it down
The weapons
And the prejudice
Evil conditioning
Perhaps
Somewhere inside
Take up something better
Food to share
Safe water
The love of life
You know
That someone else
A group perhaps
Might need

The Advocate
x
What shall we say
But that God loves us
Anyway
We will be judged
And all the rest
All we fear
x
But our doctrine
Represents reality
For there
Will be an advocate
Like a lawyer
Pro bono for love
To stand for us
With something better
Than our fear
Our guilt
Could understand
x
Something that works
To save us
Anyway
Through lack of evidence
Or character
Reports
But for love of us
That we reached out for
Just a smidgeon
x
Was enough
