Black Branches

x

The squirrel ran criss-cross

Up the branches

x

Zig-zag ladder

I certainly had not noticed

Upon

Looking out

Into the dark-grey day

x

The squirrel’s smart

Good legs

The tail helps

x

And the creature’s

Totally

Impulsively involved with nature

To be so in tune

With all vibrations

x

Must be astounding

To have so much

Ordinary

Magic

x

x

8 to try

x

Hanukkah tonight

starts

8 days for a miracle

x

what if

we try this for our

universal selves

x

8 days for peace

before they arrive

that is

something

outside ourselves

to judge

x

pretend

there is a deadline

x

find out

how far we get

then let it stay

for real

beyond 8

you know

as long as we can

or may

x

8 and more

as if the world

were at stake

which

you know

it is

Blessings of Lights in Darkness

(x = space)

Blessings of Lights in Darkness

(appreciation of a Gentile toward the Jewish family)

x

Somewhere in Advent

Hanukkah begins

x

Sundown tomorrow,

I believe

x

Eight nights of blue

With silver lights

That dedicate

The temple

From our enemies

x

They’re gone:

We don’t have to think

About them

x

Now, there’s chocolate

And treats

In games

And gifts,

Small delights

And big ones for the heart

x

Anticipation

Practice

Family

x

My ignorance

Like ignorance

Has walls;

I’d rather be inside

The spirit of redemption

And occasion,

The community

x

The relief in having realized

Somber times

x

The pleasure now,

The fun

Of shalom

x

Eight days

Of miracle,

Of remembrance and the meaning that

Creation is in food

Also in candle lights

And in each of us

Singly

And specially together

Now

x

The one who saves is blessed

And offers blessing

And is the one

As one

Who provides seriously

And playfully as well

x

Is here

Beyond the count of days

And nights

But who is here

Inside these eight,

All the intimate hours

As we draw near to them

To have,

To share

x

Next year in Jerusalem

Then

And now with family

x

From the source of blessing,

Bless

And

Keep you, friends

Call of the Light

A Wish for Light

(x = space)

x

x

A Wish for Light

x

Deep blue

And silver

Dreidel

Chocolate coins

An outsider’s perspective

Become somehow wistful

x

Eight candles

Sometimes nine

What do I know

But this is festive

Quiet for prayer

Then noisy with the spinning

x

Did they know,

The temple keepers,

Did they ask for miracle?

Or did they use up what

They had,

Oil in lamps,

Then settle in their minds

For darkness after?

Did they ask for miracle?

Do we ask?

x

Deep blue and silver—

Light!

Eight days for festivity,

Community

x

Many blessings

In both solemnity

And fun,

Contemporary miracles,

And simply

Happy Hanukkah
