New Testament

To Philemon

(x = space)

x

To Philemon

(“and to the church in thy house”)

x

We are encouraged

By your faith

In fact

We have joy

x

Give Onesimus

Another chance

We send him

To you

He may have wronged thee

Take him back

x

If he owes anyone money

Or its equivalent

I will repay it

I tell you this myself

Who

Told you about the faith and

So be saved

x

Receive him

Who to me has

Become

Peer and colleague

And he will serve you

Especially this way

x

Treat him now

As one who has

Standing

No matter how it might

Have gone

Before

x

Let the deeper parts

Of all of us

Be glad

That we are one

In Christ

x

From all of us

Who live

Captive by the world

For now

Grace and peace

To thee

And thine

x

From prisoners with me

Consider It All Joy

(x = space)

x

x

Consider It All Joy

x

Let the outside

Be awful

If it must

For princes of the world

Might have their own way

There

(not letting

princesses rise

by the way)

If only

There

x

Be good on the inside

Your own realm

Where you have willed

Let in

Avowed

God to rule

While you serve God

Servant

Steward before monarch

Even when pressed

Persecuted

Outside

Sigh

Sometimes devilishly

On the inside, too

x

Consider it all joy

The paradox of life and death

And resurrection

Final joy

Complete

And unrelenting

Even

In new tasks

Assignments from

A celestial magisterium

Or shall we say

The will beneath the crown

Of the Lord

x

Doing what God says

Because

The glass is clear and

We can hear

x

x

Consider it all joy when we must have trials, knowing that this testing of our faith makes endurance.  And let endurance be complete even by trials so that we are whole, lacking nothing that we really need especially inside.

Thessaloniki

x

x

Thessaloniki

(from a skeptic maybe unknowing, maybe envious)

x

To the Thessalonians,

x

God wrote you twice

Once was not enough

Why not?

All the other cities

Jerusalem

New York

That did not get a postcard

Or a phone call

A telegram to say with urgency,

Wake up

And smell the western Asian coffee

You got two letters

It could be said you’re twice as bad

Or that the urgency was dear

Are you better now?

I should come to see you

How you’re doing

But I don’t have a camel or a burro

And Land Rovers are expensive

I have to see the wall

Through video eyes

Though I hope my prayers

Are real enough

I write my petitions

And read your letters

(I see you’re actually

pretty good)

Hope for the best

And signing off

A Little Hermeneutic for a Saturday Morning

A Little Hermeneutic for a Saturday Morning

(1 Corinthians 12:17)

If all were an eye

Which is a phrase I heard

(maybe in translation)

Then the body would have

Nothing else to do

Beyond looking

Sounds dull and

V R notwithstanding

Two-dimensional

Only when the body is all active

Is there interest and

Engagement with all the creation

That’s around us

And with the Genesis maker

We can say

(we have mouths)

That this is good
