Men into Space

Men into Space

(someone else’s nostalgia)

William Lundigan beat them all

Because he got to space in the fifties

I didn’t see this show while

Growing up

Or Johnny Sokko with his giant robot in the

Half hour before

Other shows I missed as well

Supercar, for instance

I guess this was the fifties-sixties way

To get us there

Enjoy the ride

And encounter who knows what

Only the television writers knew

Thankful for retrograde, I guess

Retroactive, retrospective

The tier of channels that carry

Our imagination

From the past

Into the present

Maybe to conferences

And comic books

And all sorts of new brains

New days

That started here

In my older siblilngs’ days

Brought forward

Into better resolution

Now let’s have, please

Women into Space

Newsong

Newsong

(starting with Psalm 96)

Sing to the Lord a new song,

Which means we should be writing all the time

Crafting notes to go with words

Consider instruments

Tempo, attitude, occasion

We have the reason

There’s no reason

A new song because creation’s always new

It crests upon us with the dawn

That is seen aboard spaceships

Over the arc of the deep-blue sea

That comes inside my house

And yours

Why do we sing so many old songs again

And one more time

Nothing wrong with that

We apply new energy each time

But we are also called to create

Beyond new versions

Why, because creation itself

Teaches of itself

Every time it rings anew

Does the dragon sing inside its keep

Does gold sing underneath the earth

In there melody inside the mitochondria

Where gene pairs harmonize

Scales

Rhythms

Measures without measure

Blank pages, open minds await

Hearts ready to practice

To perform all nerves aglow,

Wary of the audience

Wondering approval

If delight

Will we beat a dance that

No one’s ever stepped?

Will we step a dance

That no one’s ever stopped?

Coda

Encore

Rest

Then return to make again

Co-make

With the composer of the universe

Who asks of us again

To find within ourselves

Something new

Psalm 46

A new world comes

And some would say

It’s here

By your hand, we might

Live in better days

The images we make

For politics or

Entertainment

Are wrung through

With shiny fakery

I think our new day

Will arrive,

Lord,

When we learn to say

I love you to the ground

And to the air

And to the wind we

Cannot see but truly

Feel and have:

When we learn the

Value of unseen things,

We can say I love you

To each other

Then your new day is

Manifest

World on Fire

World on Fire

Several states in USA

Bear fire uncontrolled;

Persons have died—

Rampant destruction

Unrolls.

UN and news services

Cite the number at

Sixty-five million who

Are refugees, another

Moving blaze.

Venezuelans break

Into stores for food—

Don’t tell me poverty

And want do not burn,

For they are always

Afire.

Politics burns as well,

Violence in discourse:

No civility here, thank

You—we’d rather talk

Through bared teeth;

Unseasoned anger is

A flame as well.

In extinguishing the

Fires, cooling help that

Even overwhelms

Then washes is virally

Needed to calm soon-

to-be charred, hollow

Hearts:

Water of

Hope, strength for the

Mind with all our literal

Muscle that can

Rescue a planet and keep

It safe, even joyful in a

Future (how about later

Today?)

Dewy and thankfully

Damp day.

And Now One Is Found

And Now One Is Found

Remember

How would we

Understand two hundred

Seventy

How would such a number

Be taken without our

Noticing

In what kind of truck

And to what place all

Hidden

In our neighborhood-filled

Planet-parts, this is

Hard

From our earthen places

We cannot count

How

But in part we can’t believe

Not because it didn’t

Happen

Tragically, criminally,

Numerically—what transpired

Transpired

And with our questions and

New trepidations here is her

Body

Now we have her with

Child and husband on the fringes

Found

We can understand, now

Perhaps, a new story of

One

Pre-Dawn

Pre-Dawn

Birds are noisy

Waking up the rest

Of the world

Mist along the

Edges of the yard

A damp feel

Light enough for

Artificial lamps

Turning useless

Now earth turns

Over a bit to be

Washed by the

Day’s new air

Bending without

Voice the arcs

Of branches

Enough for them

To moan a little

Wind cleans night

With round beads

Of dew water

Surprise and

Comfort in the

Dawning tasks

Psalm 31 — a song, a request

Psalm 31
a song, a request

Lord, your love rises above
All; let me, with your choosing,
Rise with you

Lift me without pain that
I might see the borderless
World below, source of your
Love in that we were made
Out of your will

Better than the dawn
Is waking to new life with
All things seeming new—so let
Me rise with you

Better than all other pleasures
And pursuits, please let
Me rise with you

Ashen Wednesday

Ashen Wednesday
(liturgical need)

You have dirt on your
Forehead, the student says

I wanted you to know so you
Don’t walk around all day
That way

But I had just come from
Church (an early mass), and
Wearing the dirt (the ash)
All day would be our routine

If I had to guess, I’d say the
Room is mostly learner-
Populated with evangelicals
With maybe an honest
Agnostic or two,

In which (for all) formal
Understanding, knowing of
Old church practices would
Not be prominent among or

Within

But any church that survives
In turn gains its own
Orthodoxy,

And we spend time after
Noticing the dirt, talking
About spiritual habits plus
Other rituals

My church is trying this,
Someone observes

Yeah, my church, too, another
Notes

And so together in discovery

It appears—newer evangelical,
Independent communities
Reviving treasured actions
Of the first church,

The one ablaze at Pentecost

Reviving in the church is good:
There is great precedence for
That

And for all of us on this new

Day, we find new ways into
(To share outside)

A faithful, ancient season
