occasion by the river
are you alive
or are you dead
the hobbit
asks
of Dwarves
while they are spitting up and out
river water
packing
straw
and thankful
none too thankful for
being free
and
yet they are
and thanks to the halfling for
half-height
saving all them
if
by an assist of magic
that he
does not understand yet is
convenient doding locks
in
a palace
and now the quest may go on
with rooks
and thrushes
maps
secret doors and try not
to consider
how one might burn
by
dragon
and the poet writes occasions
restore the old
honor new
and
a party ‘round a huge old tree
for both
then the occasion is a book
the red one of his own
with
help in finishing
and then it
goes to
us
and our safe-keeping
but not by leaving
the book
closed
but hear
and then
well
harken

The Hobbit is a novel by J. R. R. Tolkien
I don’t know how I thought about this moment in the story and to start writing on it
photo by Mike Holford on Unsplash--“Minutes from stepping off the ferry to Sark Island, we decided to walk to the campsite via the coast path. This tree really stood out as a contrast to the yellow glow of the field and the brilliant blue if the sky and sea. Looking forward to exploring the island more!”
As We Are, No Other
(Christmas Eve, anytime)
This is a good surprise
We are invited to a dance
And we don’t have to know
Anything about steps or rhythm
Or the key of the orchestra
It’s a party, too
All we have to do to respond
Is see the card
In leaves or
Hear the invitation in the branches’
Song to sky
It’s for a birthday, yes
Don’t worry about timing
The child knows of better things
And will manage precision for you
We have this chance
Will it come again?
Yes, I think so
But we have it
Why not take part now?
Mister Dickens claimed
A few pounds make us happy
So Fezziwig will close the shop
And take the silent cost
In that
And pay for decorations, too
We might have to be our own accountants
White elephants might attend
(maybe black cats
zebras to negotiate)
There might be stone soup for supper
Served in lucky pots
Hey, but it’s a party
And if we own nothing
All the better for arriving
What do newborns have,
And how welcome are they?
It’s a party without consequences,
Because we will behave
Enjoying the relief of good, clean fun,
Everyone welcome
The birds will sing
If we don’t want to
And sing, anyway
Nature speaks in volumes
It’s miracle
We could provide the miracle in
Listening
Enjoy it all
Bring what you have
Or nothing
Remembering that at this kind of
Festival,
We are the gifts

White elephant is a metaphor from the USA and Britain, based on Asian custom (with real elephants).

J. R. R. Reading Day
25 March
(Not that there’s anything to
Mind, but)
How was this decided?
What happens in the story
To commemorate?
What’s in the lore?
Having a day made right
For reading about rings
Or the Silmarils
Or ships retiring west to
Middle-Earth’s Elysian
Shores—or imposing corsairs
Creasing through southern
Waters
All this is good
If a day to be celebratory
Even better
An excuse to wake up our
Hobbit aspects and have
Bilbo’s birthday party, after
Reading, under the great
Shire tree
Not having to wait
‘Til 22 September
When we can make the party
More fantasy
Officially
Again
