The Tower Treasure

x

I live on the second floor,

No great height

Up from me is Tower Hill,

A name from history

Since there is no tower

That I know of

x

Wouldn’t it be romantic,

An adventure?

And for the Hardy Boys

And Nancy Drew,

Cherry Ames

And the Bobbsey Twins

(maybe somewhat

grown up

maybe)

Robbers hiding out

In said high place

With those who always

Want to find the ancient

Loot breaking in

From time to time

x

So that now everyone

Wants jewels of differing

Centuries

And there are flashlights

There are yet-to-be passages

To find;

There are guns

Because good stories

Mention risks

There are old stairs

And so much dust

And colonies of cobwebs

x

And in the nearly final act,

There is confrontation

Of all parties

With nearly everything

Discovered

Until the final trick

The heroes get to throw,

Distraction that gives

Time enough

For law enforcement

x

Then all friends

Meet in peace

Have snacks

At the place in town

Where all the young ones

Meet

To read the story

Above the fold and farther in

x

And we close the covers

(books and beds),

Pining for our treasures

x

Never

The end

If you would like to read about a treasure in one’s own town (a novel, I’m afraid), there is for children (of all ages) The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn by John Bellairs.  And many more such stories, I’m sure.  Or you could write such a tale.

The Topic Is Admonishment

(x = space)

x

x

The Topic Is Admonishment

(Sunday morning sermon and discussion)

x

Well, let’s see

God admonished Moses

And admonished worse the rest of

The Israelites

The donkey admonished Balaam

Elijah admonished Jezebel

Ananias and Sapphira were not given

Time to be admonished

But were killed for lack of generosity

And lying about it

x

Admonishment seems to be

A touchy theme

How are we to do it

Without getting killed?

x

Well, we are,

I guess,

To do it

Though I think it has to be

In an absolutely constructive

Fashion

In which we ask each other first

Who we are

And how we are

And why, in love, this is necessary

And then we go ahead

x

Knowing we might lose

The relationship

And lose in other ways

Stones on the path

That God does not remove

Before we strike them

And now

We must do something

Even though

But knowing

That the path continues

On the other side

This is my response and some (little) summation of the sermon and groups talking about admonishment at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, West Lafayette, Indiana, on 25 July 2021.

x

3 Colossians 16

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

(New International Version)

x

1 Colossians 28
We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

Friends are back,

And they will leave again

I come and go

As well

We are the

“Karma Chameleon”

x

There is more space

Here, because good people

Took some

Things away

To have new homes and uses

Elsewhere

x

Not all is well:

Headaches

Of all kinds

You know

I try to sleep

I try to write

x

But the sun is out

The humidity is broken for

A while

There is a-c and another fan;

There is food in

The fridge

And on some shelves

x

Not exactly

Christmas in July

And, yes,

Christmas in July

Quiet Start

x

I am quiet

And for a change

The building’s quiet

I have ordered food

Staples, that kind of thing

It should be arriving

In two hours

Or less

x

It’s a breathing moment

When the sun is considering

Fully rising

Though it’s tussling

With some clouds

I like this time

I wish my coffeemaker

Wasn’t broken

x

But I’ll take this

For a Friday morning

Pray for all the tragedies

By nature and by us

Do some plain old

Wishing, too,

As if I had an unironic genie

Who would simply give me

What I wish

Even world peace

Or something like that

Unbroken Surprise

I’d like to offer prayer

Of thanksgiving

For I have received

Good help

I can question how deserving

But I got it, anyway

x

In the moment,

Certain things let go:

Doubt, worth,

Particularity

People give, and I receive

Not that I haven’t helped before

x

But here is the receiving side:

Thankful, relieved

Not burden-free

But bearing less

Than before

x

All this to say thank you

To both sides of prayer

The givers

And this time

The one who has so gladly taken

Good Machines

(x = space)

x

Good Machines

(for Earthly terrors)

x

Perhaps we could have cosmic-

Earth machines,

x

Could the floods

Be sucked up here—say,

In Germany and China—then

Taken and dropped there

Where the land

Is dry

And ablaze as the land

In California,

x

Then we’d have a system

Perhaps in harmony with nature,

x

Technocracy that favors life

In joy and praise

Of what machines can do

x

With pay and gratitude

The human operators

Deserve

Every spring the Mississippi River floods, but the downtown area of Davenport Iowa refuses to build a levee system to hold the waters back. It would block the river view. Some years the waters come several blocks up the banks and flood out local businesses.

Countdowning

x

It’s Tuesday,

And I didn’t know

This was happening

I follow the news

Though clearly

Not the timetables

x

I thought we’d

Have more time

To get used to the

Variance in the crew:

The one with white hair,

The one with shiny

Brown

x

Maybe when this

Is ordinary, things will

Be better

Arch-safety

Will be ordinary,

Less frantic for those

Of us

On the ground

x

They holding,

Time for nervousness

Please launch already

Then come back

Childhood’s Beginning

x

Childhood’s Beginning

x

Here is the litany of complaints:

My back hurts;

I’m tired;

I’m tired of my back hurting

And my feet

And sometimes my left shoulder

And the headaches

x

I should soak my feet in

Medicated water,

Something like the

Still water

We are promised in

The company of the Lord

x

You have a list,

I’m sure

x

And I mean to be respectful,

But sometimes

The child’s cry is stronger than the

Grown-up’s

Sense of things; and

We should listen to

The child,

The plaintive child,

The honest child

x

Sometimes it hurts—

That’s all there is

Presuming Invitation

(x = space)

x

Presuming Invitation

x

Dear citizens of heaven,

I hope to meet you

One day

x

I mean, I believe;

But like the Amish who

Respond I hope so when asked

About salvation,

I too am not taking anything

For granted

x

But I do look forward

(if not too forwardly)

To understanding

Golden streets that are

Transparent

And how a person (Jesus)

Might be a building,

Too

x

And if you don’t mind,

I’d to visit the renewed

Earth that revelation

Promises;

Maybe I could be assigned

There for a while

x

And what about the rest

Of the cosmos?

How much fell,

And how much will be restored?

I hope there are tours

x

I hope I might be allowed

To journey on my own

Or with a few companions,

Maybe newbies

Such as myself

x

All this is presuming, I

Understand;

And maybe nothing’s like

The screen that I see

Through for now
