supernal
rainy day
now how about windy
cold
you know
seasonal
autumnal
the coolness of fall in
the MidAtlantic
leaves trying to turn
but
needing the first frost or
really
just before
cool brilliance
cold
fire colors
dragon’s breath on leaves
they fly by at night
autumnal
serpents
breathing gently
(for
a dragon)
keeping the undersides
dark
scattered stars
the only things
not
to see
then to glide away
so we may warm by sight
and
smell the clarity of morning
with trees burning fall’s
consumption
only
and maybe
as
not
too soon
winter’s investment

circumference
things
have happened
I don’t know
we’ve talked about some
but
sometimes
closer in
closer in takes over
and the world might still matter
but for a while is encircled
by
loving arms that
must
then
be letting go

quasi-moon
quasi-romance
I suppose
to look on it from Earth
a companion
for
Artemis
love and hunting
in
need of a new horizon from which
to search the sky maybe with
a plan to take the new step
now
and for a while
so to
rescue the Pleaides
from Orion
then perchance to dance
together
freed in a midnight’s new quasi-lunar
glowing

that’s entertainment
funny how when
sick
things for entertainment
don’t work
become annoying really
except
I wouldn’t want the crying quiet
either

equinox we say
though Earth knows how to move well
undeterred by lines

peregrine
another poem about breathing
breathe on me
breath
of God
that would be nice
I think Aslan breathed on people
and they were affirmed
to
exist and even have a calling
though maybe
existence
was enough
to know that God love me
for me
but
no
I should
do something
too
as I’ve wondered
and I’ve wandered
like the song
and like the song I wonder
while
wandering
why Jesus had to die
and
did he wonder
too
while he was wandering
well
we’re here
Jesus
Spirit and God
and me
without standing or power
a world to cheat
as well as to say hello
hello
maybe the start of cheating
and
what is my place
when it seems I have no place
I am God’s
I’m sure
though God be angry with
my performance so far
and
yet is love
Jesus and Spirit
too
to help
I want
to trust
I hope

at four
I moved a bunch of things around
at four
a.m.
and
do you ever feel that way that makes
you move
by impulse
maybe a sign of depression
of
at least preoccupation
then
to hope by the day inhabited
more sensibly
changes all
look or serve in another way all right
about the depression I have pills
and counseling
and
then the need to be up at four moving things
around
in what I think is
my home
life
though I’m not sure I was thinking anything so grand then
in
the dark hour rather unsaintly
of unknowing
and now
I think on it
I knew
a chaplain who when he had to told me
that he cleaned his place at
two
antemeridian
that is

church going in again
(with reference to “Church Going” by Philip Larkin)
oh
Jesus
keep me alive
‘til I can find a church
and
have the morning energy
to show up
church
returning
(Mister Larkin and will you excuse
me)
in the mean time please with grace and
miracle
won’t you
please
and thank you
and
this is how I talk
to a God
Jesus my pal
(as in the movie)
buddy
friend to meet at diners
and
well
maybe so
maybe Jesus is a companion
in
familiar ways
and
might not mind our forward comments
or to go so easy
with doctrine though I’m not so sure
about
commandment
I say in
need
of grace and miracle
again
