Doctrine by Tempest

x

And should I turn

To the Spirit,

How shall she say

Or guide?

To love in all things,

Though that

Can be a mystery

Like faith

And should I ask for grace

Or is that bestowed

In quantities

Already

Measured out by God,

Dispensed by angels?

I don’t know,

I think grace might be wild,

Ready to fall itself

Into the crisis

Spreading all the elements

And changing time

For

Working things,

Which means perhaps

That prayer

Is unchained, too,

And to do so

Into the storm

In terror

And unformed bequest

Well, it counts

Monday after Sunday Prayer

x

Lord,

What’s going on?

Where are you?

Where are we?

Are we lost,

Or it is that

So much seems lost

On us?

x

Do we simply

Not get it?

We engine on

And sometimes there are wheels

Where do they take us?

Why should we make the trip?

x

Too many questions

We want some

Certainty,

Please

We want to know

We’re on the path to

Something good,

What we’re aiming toward

And heading toward

Is good

x

Good for prosperity

Good for wisdom

Good for relief

On our arrival

x

How will get there?

Do angles light the way?

And yet

Some part of us must be

Agnostic

Must question

Doubt

x

We have to assay

Whether it’s treasure

Or rust

Or rusty treasure

x

To take

Simply admire

And walk on

x

Into future

(into Tuesday)

To the next site

A challenge

The next prayer

Lord,

It’s a good day

For normal praying

x

In churches everywhere

There will be choruses

That say it right

x

But my prayer

Is cacophony,

Nothing regular

Or regularly rhythmed out

x

I hope you will forgive that,

All the off-pitch, off-key

Murmuring,

Uneven humming through

The perfect angel-layering

Of formal prayers

x

But I need you;

I need your company

x

You could simply sit close by,

And maybe we’d say nothing

To each other

And somehow know

Eternity is hearing

Everything as it should

x

Everything that’s needed

To respond just right

To an uneven,

Lopsided,

Person praying badly

x

Out of place

In whatever place

Quiet Start

x

Quiet Start

x

I am quiet

And for a change

The building’s quiet

I have ordered food

Staples, that kind of thing

It should be arriving

In two hours

Or less

x

It’s a breathing moment

When the sun is considering

Fully rising

Though it’s tussling

With some clouds

I like this time

I wish my coffeemaker

Wasn’t broken

x

But I’ll take this

For a Friday morning

Pray for all the tragedies

By nature and by us

Do some plain old

Wishing, too,

As if I had an unironic genie

Who would simply give me

What I wish

Even world peace

Or something like that

Life in 3/4 Time

x

I’m sorry, Lord

I spent half my life repressed

The other half aggressive

Now is a time of

Negotiated peace

I’ve tried to give up everything

From each time

Even time

So that now there’s little left

With which to make a new life

Made of acceptable things

For an acceptable time

x

x

Pray for Friends

x

Lord,

Watch over all my friends

Send your angels to protect

Them from all kinds

Of things

x

There is sickness

There are sick pets

There are jobs

And then no jobs

And sometimes jobs

Not worth the having

x

And sometimes things get

Broken, and there is pain

Of all kinds

Sometimes relationships

Are broken and I cannot

Speak with expertise

But eschew all the bitterness

As well

x

They are people, mostly

Some are animals

And I pray that where something

Has been split,

You will fill in with healing

And a promise

x

Though tomorrow only waits

While today is what

We have

So I must pray for now

For them

For you

Unelegant Petition

God,

Will you give me a good day

This day?

x

This is whining,

And it isn’t:

There’s real pain, confusion,

And frustration

x

And I’m not certain

Of my way

x

Maybe bad days can show

The way as well;

But I’m asking for a

Good day simply,

Well,

Because it hurts

x

But if a prophet’s

Tortured way

Is necessary,

Then so be it

(amen)

Though I’d like the way

To be smoothed soon

x

And so you know,

I’m glad to work

In the be-thankful-for-small-

Favors

Department

Anytime

God, help me

With devotion

Not the famous kind

I don’t think

I could hold that well

But quieter,

Between the two of us

And any interested

That we all might

Turn

And turn again

So that you and the sun might

Bleed together

And everything

Be many

And be one

x

Maybe it is famous,

After all

I learned certain moments

From someone

To begin with

And the well-known word

That ends

It all

‘Til next time

today good people

met

they talked

and prayed

maybe did the praying

first

it’s Sunday

but it could be on a Friday

or a Wednesday

or a Tuesday

you know, any day

I’m sure

in any hour

x

they pray for other people

for the Earth

for peace

for wisdom

for discretion

when it truly is

the better part of valor

x

they won’t quit,

these folk

they’ll meet again

talk and pray

or maybe pray first

I had church today with friends

Five hundred miles from here,

And I am thankful

x

I’m not sure what it means or

How it counts, and I guess mostly

I don’t care

x

There was prayer and conversation,

And God was mentioned many

Times and Jesus

x

I think if there were an attendance

Book, our names could be

Fairly entered

x

As it is, computers have recorded

In theirs pathways our participation so

Cybernetic stars
