To Philemon

(“and to the church in thy house”)

x

We are encouraged

By your faith

In fact

We have joy

x

Give Onesimus

Another chance

We send him

To you

He may have wronged thee

Take him back

x

If he owes anyone money

Or its equivalent

I will repay it

I tell you this myself

Who

Told you about the faith and

So be saved

x

Receive him

Who to me has

Become

Peer and colleague

And he will serve you

Especially this way

x

Treat him now

As one who has

Standing

No matter how it might

Have gone

Before

x

Let the deeper parts

Of all of us

Be glad

That we are one

In Christ

x

From all of us

Who live

Captive by the world

For now

Grace and peace

To thee

And thine

x

From prisoners with me

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act

x

I can’t imagine

How it is

To be imprisoned, innocent

Martin Luther King, Junior

The apostles Peter and Paul

Henry David Thoreau

Doctor Mudd for setting

Booth’s leg

x

These people were indicted

For their jobs

Nelson Mandela

x

Now there are the women

I should know more and say more

Suffragers

Protesters

Wanting votes

A real wage

A chance for the machines

Not to grind our living down

In a new age

x

There are those in rank

I do not understand

Women, children, men

Who lived in prison in the Tower

Sometimes freed

Often executed

Often simply dying there

x

There are crimes, I’m sure

Prison sentences

That might make sense

If bankrupt of compassion,

The strength of prohibition

And correction misdirected

And I don’t know

What to say for those

x

We’ve decided for our lives

To keep you away from them,

From everyone

Who lives under the sun

Or the comfort of moonlight

At night

x

Civil disobedience

A cause

A call

Evangelism

“Adversity, Misfortune”

“Adversity, Misfortune”
(written with all urgency)

Is what it means
Malheur (thanks to
Collins), and there is
A certain story about
That (Mister Thurber,
You can look it up)

But the story that is
Written now can
Only add to the
First meaning

Set fire? No
Imprison any longer?
No
Militia? We have
The National Guard
(I know, national)

Grace, which translates
Closely all around,
Needs abounding here

Not perched in a
Distant tree, an
Observation pillar,
Waiting to return
To normal life

Not to blame the bird
The bird is natural,
Even as a metaphor

Grace is better
It takes “mal-heur”
To render it “bon-temps”
(Sorry if I slaughter French
A language I enjoy)

I am of Northwest
I am in Oregon (check
The names)

My grandfather built
Refuges like
Malheur (though I’d
Like to think he’d have
Checked the name)

All are right in this
All are wrong
Everyone back up
And change the stakes

Then everyone not further
Newly charged (please, no)
In need-corrected wrong

Everyone
Go
And be home
