the question of this evening
(responding to “Now the Day Is Over”)
evening draws nigh
the old song
imposes
for the song becomes
well
rather maudlin
melancholy
minimally
there is a prayer
and that’s fine
for Jesus to keep us through
the night
but
some will ignore
all this prayer
to fire up
the evening hours
instead
so lie low tonight
or charge
the time there is
to pub
and such
though morning comes
and with it
some responsibility
unless
retirement
has taken over
as an age
or
attitude
and then
what then
a song of peace
results in consternation
for there is much to figure out
by night
by day
rebellion
indifference
extremes cut through
by rest

(the song often sung in my college chapel Sunday night—here, sorry, the assurance questioned
Now the day is over,
Night is drawing nigh,
Shadows of the evening
Steal across the sky.

bright day
bright day
blue and cool
another day of this
is promised
by the forecaster
but what we know for sure
is what we have
blue and cool
bright day

Deal-Making with the Lord
(sigh, didn’t work for Moses)
x
Lord,
The stomach feels
So tight
I’d like relief
Though
Really
At the source
x
All my troubles
I can’t escape
Them
Though I could
Escape a few
x
And is
Escape the answer?
Probably not
(worse the
luck)
I imagine there is
Something
By the way of
Resolution
x
But some things,
I think,
Can simply
Be made better
Call it grace or
Miracle
Or one side
Of a pledge
x
Please, Lord,
Ease
The pain
Give me days
Without
The consequences
I’ll work
On the rest,
I promise

Prismatic
How
Is it, God,
That you can love all things?
You can
Your capacity is the ocean
And the stars
With all that swims in both
Your depth is above heaven
Down to hell,
Deeper
We think ourselves so much
We move upon a planet
We are cruel
Sometimes we are kind,
Which shouldn’t have to come
Across
As a surprise
Are you sorry that you gave
The rainbow?
It’s a pledge to keep us here
There might be tests of
Floods, and
Maybe they could tempt you
Though I think we have your word,
If anyone
Could keep it
If anyone could stay a hand
Waiting for
What happens next
If there’s anything in a
Surprise

And if there might be something brief
Through which some color, texture pique
Something that says, let’s hope awhile
Let’s take the light
Whate’er we can
Let fire our receptors to
Ignite incumbent senses and
Help those withal
We have our space and time
And time to find inside
And when we can no longer bear
The creature in the garden will return
To make it right
At last
With everything contracted in
First promises
First days

Driving through the tunnel, the lights alongside, guiding our path beckoned me.
