Rafah
It’s Ramadan
A million people
Faithful
For what
I am unsure
Being not so faithful
For life
For rescue
For prophets to keep
Teaching
On the will of God
And to submit
While hospitals
Can’t work
And food cannot arrive
And there’s no living
Room
Or space for peace
There is an endless countdown
For invasion
Until the count is ended
With more shelling
And then many
Many troops
Darkened by masks
What passes for medieval armor
And bearing
Oh
So modern weapons
And in Israel
They wait as well
Still mourning
And some strategize
An ending to Hamas
While others
Simply want for life
After grief
To move them on
They want the desert
Want the mountains
Want the seaside
Want to work
And play
And love
Their way through life
The human way through life
Though there is fear
Of extinction
Here
Too small
Too new a country still
Against
How long were the reigns
Of kings
And queens
And prophets
Both sides
Have hellish prospects
Rooted
And growing
Though the blood and time
That has poured in
After seeds
Branches
That look like tension
More than fruit-bearing possibilities
Seasons
That lack distinction
Not from the wilderness
But from
What we’d say
The human heart
The mind
Both hardened
By reason
And by fright
By reasonable fright
And also anger
Anger at the other
Sometimes at one’s own
And where is life
In all this
Where do the walls come down
Enough
For work and play
The desert
And the mountains
And the shoreline
Of the ocean
To walk in
And look out toward
The horizon
Without a horizon
Blurred lines
But there the sun will set
As if the only clock at work
The moves
With assurance
Of the daytime
And the night time
And that’s all

A Good Wednesday
(Passion, Passover, Ramadan)
x
It’s Wednesday
When Amanda would
Bound—how
Does one bound
If one is not
A deer?—but she
Would bound
Into class and
Announce, “It’s
Hump Day!”
x
Now it’s Holy Week
So this is Holy
Wednesday
For which there
Are liturgies
With special
Prayers
x
We imagine
What Jesus
Might be doing now
Because we are
Conditioned
By the narrative
For timing
x
Maybe he’s visiting
With friends;
Maybe he has actions
And words
For healing
And teaching,
Knowing what’s to
Come and having
These his
Final opportunities
x
For us
This year
There is a confluence
Of events,
Of seasons:
It’s Ramadan
And also Pesach
Or Passover
x
There are several days to each
That are the same
x
Three great truths
Come together,
Great faith
Celebrated
Bittersweet
x
Bitter
With fasting
And remembrance,
Sweet with
Fasting and remembrance
x
God is great
x
The angel passes over
Faithful homes,
Jesus saves,
And the prophet receives
Revelation—goodness,
Such good chances
That we have
To respect
And enter into
Many groups
x
The places where we worship
(observant)
Entering with curiosity
To know,
To have regard
For learning
And appreciation of
Our neighbors
x
Respect, appreciation—these
Are forms of love,
The kind of love
That comes from God
To feed our faith
In one another
x
As if God could say,
Come together
Right now
Over me
x
But don’t imagine
Not a heaven or a hell:
With appreciation
Of the music
We can have some
Heaven here
And have it there

Ramadan
(2021)
x
Ninth month in the lunar calendar,
A time for fasting and reflecting
On one’s faith and submission
To God’s will
x
At night, we eat
Though I think we might save it up
For the three days’ celebration
At the end, Eid al-Fitr
x
Many, so many, would try to go
To Mecca or Jerusalem;
Though as with everything else,
This time must be different:
It’s not safe to travel
For ourselves and for our neighbors,
So community will have to mean
Home stays
x
But the meaning is unchanged,
And I wish for my neighbors
Days of prayer and meaning
And a season of
So many blessings

Sunset Ramadan
(5 June 2016)
I have memories
Of a Ramadan, a
Rosh Hashanah, too
I like the Christian
Holidays, but others
From these faiths
Invited me
To ritual and cuisine
And, best of all,
Community
Love permeates
Actions when they
Are in spirit
Inch’Allah
And our God is
Pleased when we
Are one
Shalom
