As It Is on Earth

x

I don’t know what I have

If I have

Anything

For me

And then for you

x

You might be first

But something about me must

Be satisfied

Or nothing travels

x

Something that could sound

Like a song

But must have sound

Regardless

In a shape that serves

And something of the world

Inside

The world and the inside

Where we live

x

Forgive me

Then

The lateness in the hour

Or anything that’s late

In getting to you

Though we have no schedule

I know

We know

And do our best

To post in blogs

Like bags of mail for ponies

Or task the runner

As at Marathon

x

We send

Receive

Respond

Then send again

It’s all a process

It’s a circle

Sacred

Called by some

And why not

Our gods as known

Believed

Walking like the

Lord

Or maybe

Gasp

Tash

Arrived

x

And in the interaction

All of us

In equal space

If not location

And for accountability

Well

Something holy happens

That is human

Set aside

As well as visitors

To take part

And approve

Rituals

We’ve had a lot of them

My ritual

Un-sacrosanct

Involves the toaster

And the order

Of the bread

To place in

And to withdraw

After toasting twice

(the machine isn’t equanimous

enough to toast it right

one time)

What kind of bread took

Time

And what to have on it

Peanut butter on

My own feast days

But without the added sugar

As narration claims

Simply

What it is

Or purported to be

x

I’m still working on the coffee

Both kind and

How much

You see,

I was given the K machine

And it’s fun and all

But I am a neophyte with it

Unready for the morning

Table crew

Thankful for the automatic

Shut-off

x

I do respect the big things

But live nearer

The small things like

Snow villages

And for

Later tide as time

(Advent first)

Learning from

My mother how

To make the bunny cake

With cardboard ears

For Easter

x

But exhalation

After holidays

And maybe what’s holy

In between,

Which is

Most days

Perhaps

And with

Small-s sacred reasoning

As in creation’s

And redemption’s

Legacy

And with

Secular reckoning

For reality,

x

Which might explain

Hot fingers

(without the invocation)

With results

In our suburban-sacramental

Tussles with appliances

E is for Erato

E is for Erato

(the muse of love poetry)

We breathe in and out our

Bodies matching moving hearts

Delight in joined revealing

Opened and shared at last

Love lingers, and that’s important

But in this time it’s passion

Sending a siren-song whose

Magic we shall not escape

‘Til breathing slows and sacred

Act eases into other life
