Sermons to the birds

And they rejoin

Bible studies

With the ocean

Ascensions at the mountain top

And then come down

To the veiled valley

Below

Most of us inhabit

x

Where we must live

Until our gospel says

It’s time

x

Our seasons tell us

Heat gives way to color

Then succumbing cool

To cold

x

We rest

And now it’s time

To rest

Until we all come back

Green blades

Rising

Songs’ abiding promises

To spring

Remaining

Up here

Circling

Until your gospel says

Forever

Eight hundred years

Ago in the

Middle part of Italy,

 

A person walked and others

Walked with him

 

But when he tried to preach

No one would hear;

So he spoke his message

Unto the birds

The raccoons (in my telling)

And all things that crept

Or flew through the air

 

He would return to people:

He visited the pope

He met with the sultan of

The Muslim warriors who

Fought in Jerusalem,

 

Because he hoped

That peace as a cause

Might overwhelm

The rest

That keeps

Getting in our way

One Dog, Two Cats, Two Dogs

 

I’m with the dogs again;

I should set out a shingle

 

Neighbor’s dog (the only

Dog from whom I’ve

Received real hugs)

 

Friends’ cats, exercises

In indifference, until I’m

The only one to feed

Them

 

These two dogs in the

Family are older, whiny,

And demanding

 

I love them both

 

What kind of irony that

Saint Francis helps me

With my pets but has not

Yet arranged for the

Curing of my allergies
