The Nightmare Merchant

I don’t like yelling

At people in my sleep

I wake up

Remembering

Feel the anger

And the uselessness

Wanting to fix things

By the light of day

I’m working out things,

I guess

Letting my subconscious

Wander freely, too freely

Maybe

I wake up with a headache

Worse than usual

With no revelation,

Either

Wondering why revel

Is in revelation

There certainly had been no party

While I slept

And dreamed bad dreams

The last dream to remember

While I’m awake today

Between the sub- and the con-,

I’ll be working on it

Still

Half-part wanting to repair

Everything,

Half-part wishing that,

Like Bartleby,

I’d really rather not

Or like Bartleby

Deal in nightmares

Imagine my surprise, nay, my consternation, when without moving from his privacy, Bartleby in a singularly mild, firm voice, replied, “I would prefer not to.”

Green Room

Green Room

It’s after nine o’clock

Not in a bar with smoky music

But in the morning

And I’ve barely slept

I hear when we age, we don’t need

So much

But that is not an anodyne for me

What is it that keeps us going

What is it that gives us pause for rest

Then takes that peace away

Pain and guilt

I can guess other things

Or is it that

During the day, there wasn’t enough running

Playing tag

Kicking the can

Hiding or seeking

Children can wear themselves out

I used to take part in that

I never thought about expenditure of energy

I wasn’t winded

The greater fear was being bored

And I wasn’t

But for all the contradictions

For the paradox that grown-up rest is cardinal

When grown-up style renders everything

Self-conscious

With affronts to dignity

All around

We reserve our steps

Then start to count them

We want to measure everything

In that is prognosis

For a life of balance

Well, I’ll try again tonight

Maybe earlier

Maybe without a marker

About how much time is good

Maybe I’ll dream about not

What is catching up to me

But what is on the caliper

Something new, even if it’s unrehearsed

Ready nonetheless

To take center stage under the lights

Psalm 44, a sleep-song

Psalm 44

a sleep-song

I nap and still am tired

Good, maybe I’ll sleep

Through the night

Napping was necessary

I was too sore and too

Worn-through

I could have stayed awake,

I guess,

Except I couldn’t

Will you still love me when

I’m gone away?

I mean, eventually I’ll

Be closer to you than

I was ever before,

Than I am now:

I like you and respect you

I seek to be near you

Is this ever enough to

Bring a dream of you

Or, dreamless, a

Long time of sleep

Because I’m loved

Throughout this night

That you have made?

I can hope so

Not because I’m smart

But because I’m yours
