Stars

Start with our own

Star

It’s wonderful

And gives us leave

To try for now

To reach

Another one

Before

A billion years

When we must go

There

To survive

Further

To strive

And also

Thrive

x

Which is the hallmark

Of our single race

In cooperation

With all other matter

x

Strive

And thrive

x

Until we meet

Another race

That thrives

By staying in one place

Those who explore

By sending tentacles

Or other metaphors

Out there

Out here

x

We meet them

And someday

We really meet them

And might be friends

For different ways

Our differences

Enhances

x

Then cooperatively

We reach

Out and in

Some more

In fact

Throughout a galaxy

And then

Beyond the rim

Stars we make

And then we make

Nearing Full

The moon is yellow

The sky is blue

The clouds are silver

The stars are white

The branches have no color

Except the color

Of porch lights

x

It’s late again

The air is cool

Maybe in the fifties

Maybe forties,

Which is not so special

As a sign of autumn

In October

In these parts

But the days and nights

Have been too warm

Now the season

Is announced

x

We’ll have the chilly fall

And with the drop

To cold

At a propitious time

Beautiful leaf colors,

Sextant

x

I have no idea how

One works

Somehow the sextants

Set

The way we need to take

In relation to

The stars’ own courses

x

Like the lodestone

The sunstone

A compass

Or the stars themselves,

We go with an absurdity

Of faith

Considering how wide

The water

x

How minimal the shorelines

And they

Save us against

The ocean’s

Featureless horizon

x

A journey by design

Or an irony of pressing,

A crossing by

The sextant’s parsecs

Tentatively ending at

A port-of-call

x

And the decision not

To yield but

To carry on,

Wayward sailors

Wayward children

weight of glory

what do we say

sometimes the weight is too much

it presses down like gravity

on a wide planet far away

x

is there grace in the stars

the kind that made them,

I suppose

the love that means covalence

molecular intimacy

and from there through our bodies

back to the stars

Fractured Confession

x

I haven’t said anything

About God today,

Which isn’t true

x

I wrote above,

Commenting on

God’s judgment

And its fairness against

Earthly powers

x

Sometimes, I think,

The issue is

Power versus prophecy

With God surprising us

In interpretation

When it rolls

And tolls

Like justice

Over Earth,

All planets,

Our sun,

And all stars

Step Sessions

Step Sessions

We have a journey to go on

Called today

I don’t know how many steps we’ll take

Maybe we’ll travel like Thoreau

Considering the cosmos in a walk to town

Maybe one place will be literal

The other living

Where stars are born

The nebula inside

Cradles of thought

To set us on our way

Until the dark of night brings out the offspring

Literal nebulae

A star for each thought born out there

A universe of mind, as it may

Marking a journey

Like our own,

Roaming energy

Through two sets of cells

Two trips going inexorably

No competition needed, no going to war

We can have quiet or make noise

Any media for growth

Though I will say

Maybe going gently’s not so bad

In a night of stars

As thoughts and ours

How many steps a journey?

Some might want

To know,

Which is okay

Let the universe and us

Decide

Apology

Apology

Sometimes I look into sky

There can be clouds

More viscerally when it’s stars

We see bucolic things

And we should

But sometimes it falls back on me

The sky, the stars

And if one can feel vertigo

When sitting still

Well

I’ve tried to imagine it all

And it has smacked back on me

The universe, as if I’m told

Cannot take me now

Don’t even try

It’s not yours

Someday, maybe

You’ll know your place

And your way around
