inventing things
you know
thinking about our making things
and how we invent
things
that nature invents things
animals invent things
dams
also tools for eating
moving earth
to make a life beneath
nature finds a way
to move great things
so that
the planet makes
some sense
and I imagine
stars are moved
for this as well

The Smallest Things
x
It’s cold
There is a blanket
There are enough things
For morning coffee
And toast
For breakfast later on
There is sunlight
So our whole planet
Has another
Day
There is water
I can drink
x
I can wash things
I can
Wash me
x
I have trash
Lined up in bags
Somewhere to take it
I have other piles
(boxes)
By the door
That should I have the
Help
Can go away
Be useful for others who
Might need some things
I had
x
My
Neighbors
Beat the ceiling
But there are no literal explosions
We are lucky
We have things
We can share
When
We want to
We can live in peace relative
To what’s inside
But peace for war
All
The same

Peace Relative
x
Relative to war
And to shutting doors
To keep things out
As if
We hadn’t seen or heard them
Once before
Or every day
x
Relative to shining in
With sunlight
Rather than
Explosives
Something negligent
Or something planned
x
Maybe not peace everywhere
Not yet
And peace organic
Certainly not remaining
Only
Peace from graves
x
Gravesides are pretty
And they’re quiet,
Mostly
We can do so much better
We should
We must
x
We want
To be there
At the end
And how about
A single turning page
Into the story of
Today?
x
Be there for that
Lift each other
The greater adventure
Is not war
Or even matter turned to energy
(it should go
the other way around)
But matters
Of the story
Withheld until we know
We have
Today
x
Next chapter
Please God
Please
Each other
Please
Let’s have the next
Have the next
Now
x
Now
Now
And now

And, But, Or, Nor, For, Yet, So
x
What do I do
When God is gone?
A question I don’t have to ask
Because it doesn’t happen
God doesn’t go away
I do
I go away when I want
To think of someone else
Of something that I want
That I shouldn’t have
When I need
Or presume to need
Enough to bump out God
From my awareness,
Which qualifies the need
As something else
x
This is straightforward:
I choose to have God in my life
Closer to me, anyway
Since God is there
Creating
Maintaining
Weeping or laughing at
What we do
Preparing for Parousia
Yet
Cherishing each moment
The now we have
We linear beings
Meaning for us
It’s a saving moment
To a saving moment
x
God is close
God is inherent
In electrons
And cellular nuclei
God will become more obvious
As we wish
As we choose
As we ask it so
(the asking’s prayer)
The devil has many ways
To snare us away
It is agenda
Of the kind that pushes will
And understanding
Inside a frame that illustrate
An attitude
Against people and the
Environment
The Earth we stand or glide
Or rest upon
All of which, the devil says,
Is unimportant
When favoring
Profit
Unhuman strategies
(inhumane)
That only matter as
Winning so that the rest
Are losers
x
Who is lost?
The burden’s hard
The burden’s easy
It’s paradox
Of faith
Of belief in God who’s only known
Through evidence unseen
Who wins a case through this?
x
Such contradictions
Such opposites
The world we love must be eschewed
If we would live, there is first
The inevitability of dying
Sheesh
No thank you
Or thank you
Our will to embrace
To choose
To live in love
With the good in everything
With faith
And hard belief that has gentle edges
In what we show each other
(as in manifest)
In what we sense
And how we deal
With everyone
With everything
By which and in which
A spirit accompanies
For good
For upbuilding
For faith
And, yes, for love
x
We live in hope
That God is there
That God is there when we return
Or when we turn around
In attitude
Repentance
Sorry and a new embrace
Of faith
Gove love this Earth
And the extraordinary creatures
That you’ve made
That is each of us
Not that we are perfect
Or perfectly anything
But in everyone
And everything
The three remain close by
The three remain close by

Something for Tomorrow
Some things are pithy
Some things are brazen
Some things are refined
Some wisdom is succinct
(though philosophy is not)
Don’t cry into your beer
Unless you want the taste;
Spitting into the wind
(as Croce advises)
Has the same problem with
A taste of something awry
(and maybe disgusting)
Love as if it were tomorrow
A gift set on your step today;
Find the joy,
If any joy be had
Endurance, if that’s all there is to have
Time is a possibility
(and love always a reminder)

Treasure Trove
We’re surrounded by things
Not always ours
But I think it’s good
Those who can have things
Everyone cannot afford acquiring
Maybe should be the subject of
Our conversation
Things mean ownership,
And ownership ties us to life
We can go too far
As so many of us do, for
Things don’t deserve attachment
That is treasure-madness
Everything is temporary, after all
I sit in a corner of my life
And wish we could talk in person
Having a drink in a favorite cup
You find what I provide acceptable
We hold forth, even outside cyberspace
And maybe make notes
After
We have a fine time
Promising another,
Knowing we will follow through
And we own a little more
Now having something of the strength
Of normal wealth

‘Cause Rosema Says So
(https://areadingwritr.wordpress.com/2016/08/14/the-happiness-tag/)
- Name five things that make you happy.
- Name five songs that make you happy.
- Nominate 5 bloggers to continue the tag.
(The Happiness Tag from Rohit of Straight from the Heart)
- Cats and dogs (they count as one), faith (though it can also make me sad), grace that surprises (it always surprises), my siblings, completing something (such as this list)
- “Just You and Me” (Chicago), “Aurora” (a wistful song by the Carpenters), “But I Can Dream” (torch song recorded by Linda Rondstadt and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra), “Be Thou My Vision” (hymn set to an ancient Celtic tune), “The Battle in the Mutara Nebula” from a soundtrack composed by James Horner (because I am a geek)
- If I follow Rosema’s lead (and who wouldn’t?), then I invite anyone with the urge—and some of you who need it
“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” ― Abraham Lincoln
