Invitation to a Wake

(with a toast)

x

We invite ourselves to

A meeting of ourselves

To celebrate a life

No longer with us

With all the possibilities

Frustrated to resolve

This side of things

And we can’t drink ourselves

Into oblivion

Because oblivion has form

And so frustrates annihilation

Of our senses

Besides, we want

To remember

And with gratitude

Share memories,

Enumerate mortality

Until the count and everything

That counts

Is ready on both sides

x

To one or those no longer

But an absence,

Here are drinks

(one of these

per one of us)

To aid sensation that

We hope will aid selection

Of desired sun-and-shade

Remembrances

Of memory

To tell

We’re Sorry, Monday Morning

x

I have some toast

I’ll have some coffee soon

And there’s nothing like cold water

To begin it all

Libation and consumption

Lead to liberation

(with les jeu de mots)

We need water

Mine goes through filters

Because we cannot drink what

We have ruined, only

Stave against pollution

Does anyone on Earth

Or above the Earth

(the ETs who are watching)

Think we are lunatics,

Invested of the moon

In an invented way?

And what can we do?

Fix all the water

Apologize to Earth

Tell Gaia that

We won’t do it again

Toast

Toast

(lids on hot food for now)

I woke up with a cold

I don’t care

I have this hour

And a day that could go twenty-four

Or become an age

As in day of the dinosaur,

Which is a really long day

You woke up this day with what you have

I hope it’s good

And if it’s not,

I hope it gets good and even better

For the hardship

We are awake

We have today

There’s sunshine somewhere

And out there the stars are turning

Movement proves life

Be easy

Or be crazy

Have a thought for someone else

And what she’s going through

We’ll see each other soon

Dancing in the skies

The circle won’t be broken or

Truth made out of lies

Now thinking-reverie must pause

Because there’s food and drink somewhere

And labor must be easy for a time

I hope we find the feast

Thank the host

Thank the guest

Hang on, if we must

Go in, because we can

On the Line

On the Line

Some days are cleansing days

I’m not sure what that means

I have a simpler breakfast

Coffee and dry toast,

I spread out around the computer

Ignore the phone (caller i-d keeps watch,

anyway)

Eat and drink and write

I’m tired enough

Though not so much

It’s a kind of litany with the elements

A collaboration with nature, God the

Maker,

And with me

Not trusting self but

Finding faith with (the) others

Gee, it’s Monday

I think the Earth hates Mondays

Sometimes (some days) I rather loathe them, too

But it’s a start-up day for the week

And that’s all right

Taking some time to prepare

A breath before the face goes underwater

The shock of cold, the return of light

When breaking through

One way or the other

Let’s see what happens

Ode to Small Things

Ode to Small Things

The toast has jumped

Thank you, toast and toaster

Those who made you

Then

Those who made you

Let’s have an ode to

Every small thing that’s good

Typing

Lids that unscrew

Peanut butter

George Washington Carver’s inventions,

The ones that were never made

You and me

And each one of us,

Small upon the planet

Large in worth

And skill

And gratitude

For being made

And someone of us who

Might fix everything
