Pirated Life

x

Several hours later,

I meet with my band

In the woods

We go to the cave

That is our hideout

And headquarters

Time (past time)

For another adventure

x

You check out the dragon

Take dimensions

Find out if he must be foe

Or would it come on

As an ally

x

You and you

Find out who has jewels

In town

And if the jewels are fair

And are the owners fair

There’s precedence

To take them,

Re-reward them to

Those who have the need

x

I’ll spy out the rest

All the possibilities

Then draw out

A fine, nefarious campaign

Out best yet and

More profitable

Than the Hood or Ali Baba

Edward Teach,

Anne Bonny,

All the rest in the unformed

Guild of thieves

There are clues

That God is there

Look to wonder

But it’s not a trick

It’s not allowed to be

If there are patterns

Or intelligence

Or anything that says

There is an origin

To the question

For skepticism

Even for lack of faith

And these are good pursuits

Because there is

An answer, maybe like

A hidden treasure

Through more like

A clarity for what has been

There all the time

Treasure

A tower in a forest

I’ve never come upon one

The tower

Maybe not a forest

There are woods around

But old-growth trees,

Wide trunks

Branches that go the distance

Tangling with sunshine?

It’s old magic, really

That I’m looking for

Maybe in a crystal cave

That better have tall windows

Or on a ship

Over a rounded sea

The only way to get

To the X island

x

There can be new magic

Bright and shiny

But sometimes burnished gold

Has all the answers

With a reason

For discovery

The old informs the new

And we are reminded why

The treasure hunt’s important

Everyone should seek something

With an impulse,

Suspended between

Heart and brain

On strings that play of life

And invitation

Wishful

Wishful

The moon is out there somewhere

Sailing ‘round the Earth

We are here, wishing we could go

Sign up for a lunar voyage

Take a chance among the stars

Maybe nothing

Maybe treasure

Worth it, we think

Earthbound

Treasure Trove

Treasure Trove

We’re surrounded by things

Not always ours

But I think it’s good

Those who can have things

Everyone cannot afford acquiring

Maybe should be the subject of

Our conversation

Things mean ownership,

And ownership ties us to life

We can go too far

As so many of us do, for

Things don’t deserve attachment

That is treasure-madness

Everything is temporary, after all

I sit in a corner of my life

And wish we could talk in person

Having a drink in a favorite cup

You find what I provide acceptable

We hold forth, even outside cyberspace

And maybe make notes

After

We have a fine time

Promising another,

Knowing we will follow through

And we own a little more

Now having something of the strength

Of normal wealth

tragic reason

her name became a

X marks this, doesn’t it?

Mammoth Find

Mammoth Find

Something fantastic was
Found under OSU—now,
In my part of the land,
OSU stands for “The”
Ohio State

Here, however, we’re
Talking about Oregon,
Where by the way members
Of my family have
Attended

Though none ten thousand
Years ago, which is the
Counting of this find—
Generally, we (and I
Mean you and me) were
Around as early wanderers

And inhabitants and so
Might have run from the
Massive body of the bones,
When enfleshed and nature-
Armed, we have now
As a mammoth—you
Know, the woolly kind

We’d have eventually
Turned and hunted down
The one in stone calcified
That we treasure now

Free away from
Primal scenes and needs
We may make friends
And maybe make amends

With its bones dryly,
Comfortably
Without tooth and claw
To rend in red our fragile
Skin

We (less bravely, perhaps)
May say:

Welcome, Ice-Age ally, to
Our better art and science

(“Nature, red in tooth and claw”—In Memoriam, Tennyson)
