Twilight Narrative

Long dream this morning

The kind when I wake

Then fall asleep again

About Bill

We took a trip together

Which we had never done

Some kind of blazing thing

A celebration of

The Midwest

Though we knew each other

In school

In the East

x

I got mad

And sad

Because I wanted to talk

With Bill about something

Happening to me

That I didn’t like my life

In Harrisburg

Wanting to say so

Wanting encouragement

Even advice

And he’d said nothing

x

I challenged him on that

A while later

(long dream)

And we got nowhere with it

We could perform

But we could not talk

Not for real

x

I woke up, realizing that

Bill would not go on another

Trip with me

And that was doubly frustrating

Mad

And sad

And then I remembered

That Bill

Had died

A brief while ago

x

My college roommate gone

With earthly friendship

Following

And I am sad

And sad

And sad

Bill liked root beer, Dad’s; root beer is brown and dreams are wavy

Back from There Again

Took a drive around and over

Through the mountains

Through tunnels

Up angles, down

The rounded Appalachians

Blue Ridge, Alleghenies

No rain or snow this time

There was wind

To blow my little car around

Clouds and sunshine vied

I got back

Hobbiton looks the same

Regarding what I left

Today,

I can only hope the cancer treatments

Work for him

A Small-S Saint to Guide Me

A Small-S Saint to Guide Me

(still on dashboards everywhere)

I’m going on a trip

I’m not sure I know the way

When I arrive, there will be family

To make it all worthwhile

It might rain

There will be mountains and

The valleys in between

I hope there will be a cloudy sky

Not enough to rain,

Rather to keep the bright rays off of me

Or, on another hand, a benevolent

Kind of sun

A little traveling music, please

The car is old

Not connected

No blue teeth

Still smarter than its owner is, I’m sure

And I have CDs

Like records, only small and shinier

Audiobooks, in fact

Thanks to my friend who swears by them

Now I am an acolyte as well

A word before I go

Once done, I’ll have to turn around

To do it all again

Back to small towns and hobbit-holes

There

And, you know,

Back again

Go on a trip. Make an adventure.

The Cost of Velocity

The Cost of Velocity

Wind is all around

Thanks to a machine

I’ll take it

Because sometimes if

We’re lucky, this

Is what we get

Maybe a mountain top would improve

Sensation

But like organic food, so-called

The fashion of the moment

Trips and climbs can’t be

Afforded

Time and money

Abrogated in favor of, you know,

Food (of any kind)

With the need to stay in place

Receipts

Receipts

I’ll keep these for a time
Since they mark and note
The trip I took not so far
Away or so long ago

Pay slips from the turnpike
To represent my drives
Out and back, a map of
A town back home I found
At a station kiosk—sometimes
These are surprise-filled
Documents, even for a
Place I know

Coffee receipts out, those
For sandwiches on the
Way back in

Business card for a city
Place, the kind of which
We do not have in my
Small town, but at which
I had lunch with my family

Saint Vincent de Paul, whose
Thrift store I visited with my
Sister, where I bought a small
Piece of clear-black glass

An olive oil store—a
Festive, promising
New niche place—I
Got a narrow bottle of
Honey-serrano vinegar
For my brother-in-law
Who cooks a lot

Purchase record for a
Calendar I bought
On sale and then the

Best—a paper testimony
From a local bookstore

How I wish there were
More like this! I had gift
Card, it had the books

There are other neighbor
Places to support—those
Selling food and clothing and
Art-expression pieces from
Those makers starting out
Close by

But these books will do
They were my part in
My going, my time away, and
My returning afterward

My small trip—for
Now, a small-documented
Odyssey
