Attempt
At church it was announced
Someone tried to kill
Donald Trump
It happened in Butler
And I don’t know the circumstances
Though I know Butler
A small town
Up Route 8 from where I used to live
Go through town
Turn left
Go on to school
From there
A smallish town
It was
And I don’t know how it is
Today
My being some hundreds of miles
Away
(not having gone back
in years)
Once my team and I
Played on the radio
There
Sang and taught some
Gospel
Parochial
Some would say
American
An easy place to hold a rally
Until yesterday
I could wish him to drop out
(I have wished)
But
Never
Never
Never
In this way
(and he won’t)
And someone died
Someone else died in the attempt
Then (also) the shooter
Others hurt
While so many of us feel wounded
This morning
In church
And in the nation
After the announcement
The Doxology was
Sung
A song of faith
As are all songs of service
Sung
In parts
In harmony
In earnest

Space Ghost
(one voice from the USA)
I’m so tired of this administration
It hasn’t spread enough hate, evidently
Time to take it to space
A space force that
Doesn’t evoke memories of Star Trek
Or Buck Rogers or the
Princess of Mars
Except maybe in libidos
But sees an end in everything
Above
We’ll weaponize the cosmos
Because the universe can’t take care
Of itself
And when it’s done
All done
What we’ll be left with is an empty room
Up there with
Nothing inhabiting
Except for angry spirits
Wondering how it went wrong when
We only wanted to burn our enemies
And ended up atomizing Earth
Sending a message out to the beyond we
Once embraced
Saying rather
Not to bother
We’ve taken care of things here
You’d visit as an alien, anyway
We’d try to detain you
Not in hospitality
Then deport you

Limerick
There once only once was a Trump
Who combed his hair over a lump
We don’t mind his hair
But what’s under there
A thought that the world is a chump
(he’s supposed to host a fund-raiser
in Pennsylvania today, and so
I couldn’t help myself)
