The Way Love Is

(Martin Luther King, Junior)

x

Today is the Monday

We set aside

To honor

Martin Luther King, Junior

Whose birthday

Is close by

He is not honored for

Perfection

But for testimony

In words and action

To the truth

That we are equal

And together we can change

The world

For the better

x

He was a minister

Though anyone

Who acts to change

The world

For the better

Is a

Symbol of God

His name was not

At first

Martin Luther

(talk with his father),

But anyone

Who speaks

To truth in love

Is truly on the roll

Of heaven

x

We need truth-talking

And truth-acting

We need to be

Encouraged

We need to act

Together

The children of

Earth for the

Now, the next

Children of

The Earth

Sometimes It’s Penance

Sometimes It’s Penance

I’d rather write of beauty

In unlikely places

Alleyways and freckles

Left-handed people

Curved things

Where everything is straight

Wild violets and dandelions

Saved before indifferently

Cut down

But there are people doing

Ugly things, who

Must be chastised

If not by me, by someone

And then there’s me

And the ugly things I’ve done

I’m going for redemption

Within my grasp

Like the exceeding heaven

In my faith

And literary tradition

Corollary Written Late into the Magic Book

Corollary Written Late into the Magic Book

In an ancient chamber,

He was locked to a device

And made to drink a potion;

Then she began

An interrogation

His answers were halting,

Brief, and

Unsatisfying

She grew angry, threatened him

With turns of wheels to

Bring down spikes

He cried out

He could do no better—

For he had deceived himself so long

That the truth was not in him

To tell,

It having been tried and tried again

For such a time

That finally it fled

The eldritch liquid moved inside

As if it dripped into

Another empty vessel

She drew back

And thought about

The habitation of the tiger

Eternal Flame

Eternal Flame

(on 22 November 1963)

JFK died today

It seems we murder him

Once a year

Not out of disrespect

(not at first, not now)

But because our curiosity

Cannot be assuaged

We want to know

We have to

Was it a coup d’état?

So many now are gone

Though not everyone

Maybe it’s easier to inquire

Today

And with the passing of more time

I don’t understand how

The killing of Archduke Ferdinand

Incited a great war

So much outrage

In civility,

But it was counted on in 1963

To change then calcify

The time

To change out daylight evidence

And what happens in

Shadows

No wonder our youth went crazy then

Protesting betrayal from

Our parents’ generation

Where are we now?

We’re here;

We want to know

The truth is poignant

It slices to the heart

Small cuts or one large

Vivisection

We live while

Everything is opened

Survival says we’ll manage

Once we know

Listen to Earth

Listen to Earth

(Sarah Doughty)

Listen to earth:

For

She will tell you much

Of love on the ground

And underneath

And in the branches

Of the trees,

Sometimes even launched

From there;

From the garden, truth—

Wild and perennial,

Knowing no

Cultivation

But the seasons;

Tendril-scent of romance

Glides onto the sky

Over water,

Upended in the course

Each time—

Thus approving

The cycle

Of immortal love

That touches stellar rings

With which Earth sings

“gaps of trust”

which I first read as “gaps of dust”

USA and Russia

Obama and Putin

we cannot see each other

for gaps of dust

which might be all that’s left

if we don’t see better

look harder

for the truth of us

Not a Trick

Not a Trick

Easter is a surprise, the
Rabbit out of the hat, one
Might wryly think

From where and when
Comes the trick-tradition
From Easter and the tomb,
I think, and Spring, generally,
In the land and from the
Time and place in which
Top Hats were popular

Something living retrieved
Out of nothing—something
Drawn out from the void

The rabbit is fecund (rabbits
Always are, aren’t they?),
The hat circular for the cycle
Of mortality, moving in
An immortal way

Hoping that, in coming ‘round,
One will pass the door to
Eternity, maybe to pause
There

Our magic with the rabbit
Is illusion—dedicated that
Way—but here’s what is
Real: the pure, created one
Has escaped the rounded
Maw of death, leaving (this
Time real) magic words working
As miracle

What is lifted now is living
Truth to behold

No applause needed or any
Desired, for this is grace

The cost of admission offered
Always, for all, a price to us
That’s free
