All at Once Everywhere

All at Once Everywhere

(for Christmas day, anytime)

It’s a holiday everywhere

Except where it’s not

Sometimes in some places that

Is normal

Some places not so much

Where there is suffering

Where there is illness without comfort

Where there is nothing but alone

And, you know,

Christ came for these

An infant will grow up into infinity

We will treat him horribly

He will return, because he loves us

More than that

He is here

He is with us, now

And all the angels

With the saints

That’s us

I speak

Then you speak

It’s good

It’s good for the church

For the service

It’s even better for us

A way to talk that has rhythm and remembrance

Ages-long and fresh each time

You speak

Then I speak

We listen—we don’t forget that part

The service ended,

We go in peace

Cat People

Cat People

I don’t know why we like

To change or stay the same

Is it up to us

As a campaign?—when

Burdened, yes, when

Abused of

Our better parts and

Aspirations

(Or maybe because we bug the

Hell out

Of those around

Us, and they’re right)

Otherwise, doesn’t the universe

Offer instinct-movement in

Gravity

And the attraction or, admittedly,

Repulsion of

Black holes and

Neutron stars?

And all the turning elements

That ask of us to

Dance if possible with joy,

Day by day,

(And anyway)

With all the nuclei?

Like felines who jump across

The yard or run the

House

Because they can

Because the gods of catliness

Say cats must—

And don’t they want to!

“Earth Angel”

“Earth Angel”

(a doo-wop song, debuted in 1954)

A melody to finish

Tiring us out, as

We dance under its

Dappling melody

We are young:

What do we care

About exhaustion

When our energy’s

Unlimited

Entropy an unknown

Peril

We go until we

Drop

We never drop

Solstice

Solstice
(in the North)

Susserating word
Whispering in frost and crystalline
Syllables, telling us
That the time is changing

Fall is done, and winter’s here
Time for nature’s rest
Sleeping, fallow
Nurtured under blankets
Of the cold

Awaiting what’s to come anew

And those of us in candlelight
With wood fires and electric lamps
LED and Cadmium
We control light and heat
No longer are we partial
To this pace

We plant and reap in this time, too
Instinctively, we have evolved

We figure out our stride, for
Good or ill, while most
Of nature hides
