Do Not Be Kept by Flowered Fields

(from a teacher)

x

Hump day, Amanda

Be nice, learners

Work and play with

Discipline and health

Do not rush to poppies

Or what might become

Another monument

We need you,

The young,

So much

On Wednesday

And for all the other days

You are so much more important

Than entities named

For exhausted gods

Than entities

At all

For Wednesday’s Children

x

What could I wish

For Wednesday

But that peace be

Everywhere

That life be for

Discipline and contemplation

Invention

Exploration

That we have enough

And a little more to share

That we accept who we are

And go from there

x

That we can be clever

And delighted

And united

That we are strong

Not for strength’s own sake

But for protection

And defense,

As we say defenses are

x

That selfishness be understood

As good

As long as otherness count

As much

Maybe a little more

Because Thursday might come

For sacrifice

The highest form of service

And be human,

Love from the highest

That is God

The Bridge to Thursday

(x = space)

The Bridge to Thursday

(Holy Week)

x

It is the middle of Holy Week

Who’s noticing

Who cares

Those huddled in churches

Mouthing with the pastor

Liturgies and litanies

All the holy words

And since it’s near enough

To Lent, there might be no

Communion,

Even practicing for Easter

x

Some of the fun churches

(there are those)

Will bless baskets on Saturday;

All sorts of folk with

All sorts of baskets

Containing elements for

Sunday dinner

Will be there

x

On the Friday before,

There will veneration

While on Thursday

An official working out

Of some kind

For the Last Supper

And the “maundy” part

Of Maundy Thursday

A command (mandatum)

To love one another,

Good reminder

For starting out the Triduum—

Or the rest

Of one’s

Of a church’s life

x

But today is Wednesday

Nothing to see here

Or hear or taste or touch

No smell of

Incense, either

Wednesday doesn’t rate

Another hump day

In the USA,

Anywhere else that arches

The week that way

x

Calm before the storm?

Hardly

There are storms, here and there

As happen

(one is brewing

outside the window),

There are the hungry

Who need big pieces of baked bread

And safe water

And more-real food

In order to sit up

Straight in church

For the coming days

x

Feed the children

Feed each other

This would make a Wednesday, a

Holy Wednesday in a holy week

Woden’s Day

x

Sometimes I sits and thinks,

and sometimes I just sits

—Satchel Paige

x

Maybe a half-blind god

Is what we need

x

It’s been a quiet

Afternoon, mostly

I mean, the cars have

To go by, though

There haven’t been so

Many and somehow

A blue sky with white

Clouds tampers everything

If only in the mind

x

I’m trying to write,

And it’s not going badly

(though much of that

is left up to you at last)

Though I’ve said that

I’m not sure what

To put down next

It is a process, isn’t it?

A balance between casting

‘Round and thinking

Considering what breaks

The heart with enough

Reason so that

Someone else might understand

Maybe not so much with mind

But with the other

Sensing parts, the ones that

Must interpret the world

Around, deciding how to act

Right before its time

x

Take a breath

The sky remains blue, even

Though the afternoon

Light is slanting a little more

Toward twilight

x

We haven’t looked

The other way

God is still with us with

One eyes or two eyes

With who knows

How many fingers

To make or toes to walk

Among us;

We’ve taken a few specs

Of time to be somewhere

Else for a while,

A place where we don’t

Have to count

With the nation and the world

Something for Wednesday

Something for Wednesday

Here’s something short

Because it’s Wednesday

And in the USA, Wednesday means a lot

Wednesday is the top of the rollercoaster

Rounding third

Frosting the cupcakes

Pulling the turkey from the oven

Hoping all the food and all the guests behave

This is what Wednesday means

It means a lot

And if we get through it and the next two days

We believe we should be issued

By the gods of seven days

Some weekend passes
