chapbooklet for wrapping up the workaday week
(should you work this kind of week with its work days)
Guide
I’ve been on trails
And there were guides
And other sites
With guides
Though Mammoth Cave
Through the National Aquarium
I thought I’d like to be a guide
And applied
And got the job
Fort Necessity
But
Too far away
And I was unwell
And so stayed put
Sigh
We think of guides
They do their jobs and then
We put them
Aside
To lead our guideless lives
Except
By ourselves
And anyone who tells us what
To do
And we obey
Or otherwise we go along
Conductoring
I like conducting
I discovered rather late
I have good sense of rhythm
And a good
Sense of pitch
I have directed groups
But did not have the chance
Realities
Subsuming
To get the training I would need
To do it and be taken
Seriously
So I do the phantom thing
As others do
Conduct when no one’s looking
There might be music on
Or all the pieces
All the voices
All the movements
In my head
Southpaw
I am left-handed
Which
Yes
I’m told means I live
In my right mind
Statistically
(I suppose actuarially)
I
Understand
We lead shorter lives
Up to
Five years less
Which seems unfair
For all the terrific baseball-pitching
We
Provide
Guidance Counselor
I think that God guides
Though I’m not sure
Although
Before my doubt should intervene
My instincts
Worldly
Ego-driven
Take over all the choices
Sometimes I withhold
The choice
Long enough to hear
Or note the tug
Of the angel voice
Or pull
To indicate
This is what I should
Do
Where I should go
So I don’t know
It’s not
Negotiation
For we’re not in any
Way
In equal places
Equal parts
And yet
It matters how I listen
How
I respond
My decisions
(predestination notwithstanding)
Seem
To matter
Which might we say
From time to time
To listen to
Your know
The better angels
The other ones
Fallen like us
And yet for that kinship
We must look
To rise
Like the ones who fly
Roll of Thunder
First the lightning
Then the crash right after
Lightning
Close
Then the count took place
Increased
As hours passed
Flashes
Persisted
Though the numbers
Said the lightning had moved on
Inside
No lights flickered
Which
In a dismal state
Added balm to despair’s
Ennui
We Are Closed
(open to what’s next)
The hours close in
The last of the workweek
In my
Current culture
There will be a kind of ending
Paced by exhalations
As we leave
Where we have been for
Hours
Naturally enough
And on our way
(exhaling)
Toward home
Or pubs
Or whatever satisfied
Distracts
Over the connotative weekend

Weekend World
Breathe well
Today
Pause
(this could be sabbath)
Within the chaos
If there’s chaos
Take the weekend
Then
If you are free
For
Our modern invention
Of two days
(so far)
To figure things out
Or
If you may
And you are free
To play
Simply and well
Plus
With time
And will
Might we think about
How small
(small if need be
small is grand)
We might contribute toward
The freedom of our neighbors
Regardless and regardful
Let it be
Because of
In spite of
A good
Time
That is good
That is good

Man’s Search for Meaning
nah
I simply cannot
come up with
what
to say
it’s Friday
named for Freya
I believe
to go with
Thor
from yesterday
I hope
you have
a pleasant weekend
fecund
(Freya would go
for this)
and with delight
without the mischief
Loki would rather
sponsor
enjoy the days
and look forward
to more
which is how
I think
we have to live
as we can
today
with an on-the-side assurance
of tomorrow
like at a restaurant
asking for
assurance on the side
you know
how figures
and metaphors
must go
as we need them for our work
our rhetoric
discourse
and persuasion
speak to
the birth of a nation
the death of gin
(for a time)
the resurrection
of our booze
(after)
say we are
a patchwork
I remember
melting pot
from school
though don’t hear it
so much
in these
so-called
grownup days
so it’s the weekend
two days to play
for those
who may
yes
chores
too
we know
running errands
and for some
there’s running
too
if you want to think
there could be time to think
though let play
and rest
be timely
too
as they are vital
literally serving life
in
all

Golde and Tevye
only a little more prosperous
so I could buy the small appliance
when I see it
or trade with less anxiety
for a car
or buy clothes to wear
for comfort more than look
though comfort
requires cost
as well
anything else
well
a less hovel-like place to live
with enough space
to keep me
without doubt
un-claustrophobic
paying for a class
now and then
so I might get better at this
and other things
and there’s fresh food for cooking
like a marketplace experience
most days
though now I’m getting crazy
over riches
I am sure
but
there it is
the kinds of things I want
or want to have
within reach

Ah
Skip it
The (really) longer stuff
It’s Thursday
Almost Friday
Almost sabbath
And the weekend
What will you do
For fun
If you have those next
Two days
(and Friday evening)
Something with family
With friends
Chores
Of course
Or to pretend
Prevaricate
With games
At the gym
On TV
In the yard
Or play in other ways
Or clean
Or study
Or do nothing
Well
Something
Always something
Even mitigated rest
Inside a world
Loving to demand
Maybe
Though
We release
Somehow
And maybe by degrees
The expectations
Of the week
Live differently
A while
Breathe deeper
Now and then
Read something
Learn something
Or read
Inside the mind
The text of stories
Flashing memories
Solidify a little more
So you remember
And can share
Even work out something
For the good
Well
Sleep
And chore
And play
And dine
And gather in
Maybe with others
Maybe with your thoughts
Certainly
If you like and can
You may go
Simply for distraction
For a while
Some
Heavy things
Can wait

A Day with Rings
x
How is your day today
I want to know
Did you clean something
Or negotiate
With dust bunnies to
Back away with company
x
It’s the weekend
You might not have the weekend
Expectations change
Deadlines
And work quantities
This could be a day of play
The virtue of busyness
Our construct for a while
Notwithstanding
x
Whatever is involved
Have a good
Deserved day
Please
And thank you

prosaically yours
more so more likely than versically
x
i’m tired
second cup of coffee
tv for distraction
more senses involved
than music
i should pray
i don’t what to say
could god answer anyway
there’s omniscience
after all
x
my eyes are tired
computer screens don’t help
nor does the time
i couldn’t sleep
rose well
into remaining darkness
wrote for hours
tried to sleep
wrote some more
that would be now
x
so here is
honestly
and what shall happen
next
is up to me
but i must manage balance
between staying in
to raise awareness
or going out
not so far
to run
to drive
some errands
x
like kenny loggins at
pooh corner
there are things to do
that are exigent
prescriptions to retrieve
gasoline to get beforehand
x
you know
i don’t have an
electric car
though i grieve historically
the stanley steamer
while i’ve only
come across
two pumps for electricity
in my collection
of small towns
what is the
strategy
for everyone
only charge our cars
at home
x
there is trash to take out
as well
first or last
and more
you know
always more
x
it’s friday
i should take the weekend
to bear it somewhere
fine
and i want
to say however plainly that
i hope you’ll carry yours
to such a place
as well
x
i should say toward the conclusion
not parenthetically
that I mourn
i talked with my sister for
a while last night
we talked
about our loss
and everything that still needs doing
that she’s doing mostly
my part is to buoy
x
if i pull that off
i should be helpful
which
is an impulse
or an instinct
from which
except in what were
and still might be
extreme and selfish times
it seems
i will not be released
x
not to speak to heroes
for companionship but
as much to say
i come from dust
x

if it’s not friday for you
or even daytime
fill in with your own day
of the week
the weekend comes
or has arrived
regardless

Secular Benediction
x
It’s Friday
And you should have a good day
You deserve it
Yes, because you are
And because
You make it
For yourself
And if circumstance allow
For you and someone else
Or others
x
You do
You are
And so this Friday is for you
In all suburban glory
The pub afterward
Or coffee klatch
Or whatever fun and healthy thing
(there are these)
At hand
Or with a small investment
In play
And for the forty hours
Ahead
x
And if you don’t have a weekend
Maybe Monday and Tuesday
Shall be yours
There should be laws
Why, there are

Then Shall You Take Me to the Fair
x
What shall we say
It’s Friday
Have a good weekend
Remember the virtues in today
We know the now we have
Is what we have
Though it’s not amiss
It’s human
We are made for this
To anticipate
To plan
And if we must
Succumbing to our impulse for impatience
Count the hours
Anticipating freedom
According to allowances
Sometime Friday afternoon
School’s out
The bell
The whistle
Everyone released
Who can be released
Enjoy Araby
If bittersweet
Enjoy the festival
The fair
Enjoy the hours
Whatever you shall have
In the days
