Questions and Answers
(easier than we admit)
God
It’s your day
As if there were a day
That was not yours
You know
Having made all of it
To call it
Day
Though we added names in time
And all of these do not agree
But
Maker of them
Anyway
And we should owe you something
For that
And you do have directives
Even as
The prophet asks on
Our behalf
What you might require
Might
Though really tell us must
Like the commandments from
The mountain
And yet
We take as options
Like
Speed limits in my culture or
Widespread fidelity in marriage
Having made
Knowing vows
And
Maybe vows
At all
You tell us to walk humbly
Carry justice and
Mercy
With us
Not because they’re easy but because
They’re necessary for
The health
And even happiness of the world
Of us
And someday
Penultimately perhaps
We’ll get it
And in time to express
And to practice
For
Impending judgment
Yes
But also for the sake
Of its own value
And the preference this walking gives
Toward
Living well
And having a whole world
(before the
last)
Of us

If We Dance
(#InternationalWomensDay)
a circle and a cross
the symbol for Earth has the cross inside
but this is close enough
to know
the movement is planet-wide
there are things that
don’t need new reason
for dealing with the ancient one
there is gender
women number more
the feminine make up half at least
of who we are
one by one
and altogether
who are we without
we are not whole
we countermand creation
what other gaps cannot be filled
with sex, yes, and
decision
we are strong
and strength will out
muscle and what’s beneath
indifference energized
to charge the fight
for what should be evidential reason
someday a woman will preside
over the table
as a woman did, once
and long ago
inviting her will be
forgone
by then
let women rule
no let about it
women can and will
seek the alliance now
call it marriage
friendship
partnering or
of a presidency
in place and time
call it quits on
masculine oppression
give up the gate
that she has managed age
by age
the less-than-half survive
through what she does
the rest, the most
already know
let her in
before she keeps the rest away
celebrate the whole one
we can be

Willow, on Three Legs
Willow, on three legs—
A wolf, one leg ruined
In a trap
Willow protected now
In sanctuary
We had a feline with
Three legs, one leg
Caught in a trap
She was purebred,
And the vet reasoned
That, once marred in
The trap, the cat
Could not be shown
For ribbons and so
Was discarded
My sister gave the
Siamese an exotic
Name, Scheherazade
(“Shahrazad,” the teller
Of one thousand plus
One tales, the tyrant’s
Wife who lives), and
For seventeen years
We lived with her
She was a gentle cat
Except for one trait:
She was the best
Birder in the cat pride
We kept then
Tragedy turned cat-
Happy life (well, not
So much for certain
Birds): Well done!
Well told,
Scheherazade
May Willow live as
Happily and as whole
(Willow introduced
To me, as with so
Many things, on PBS)
