bughaw
if I were Filipino
(and sometimes I
wish I were) or at
least Philippine-
adept,
I might look out
at a sky that still
surprises and say,
That is bughaw
of brightest, well,
bughaw.
And you might
say, next-to-me
Philippine friend,
That is so sweet
that you remember.
Although, dear,
your pronunciation
is atrocious. Well,
I could try it in
Spanish
and would then
butcher words
bilingually.
To which you say,
as you do, That’s
all right, I’ll take
your hand in
whatever word you
misapply.
To which I might
sigh in what I’m
sure is unearned
satisfaction.
We look at the day
of bughaw, our
language loyalty.
