Pagsamo

Pagsamo

Beggars can’t be choosers

If wishes were horses, then

Beggars would ride

Don’t look a gift-horse in

Its mouth

So we should beg for mouthy

Horses

And for wishes

I think I’ve begged, when I’ve

Been scared the most

I begged for life—I begged

For life with you

I begged more than once

For more than one

muni-muni

muni-muni

a word of such

slow spice, we

say it twice

(sorry, maybe

a better pun

for English)

wondrous,

though, to have

a word unfolded

that in the

saying is its

process

savor the depth

of thinking

we can go

muni-muni

we enter a bell

to dive into

an ocean of

insight and

relation

we go deeper in

to move further on

bughaw

bughaw

if I were Filipino

(and sometimes I

wish I were) or at

least Philippine-

adept,

I might look out

at a sky that still

surprises and say,

That is bughaw

of brightest, well,

bughaw.

And you might

say, next-to-me

Philippine friend,

That is so sweet

that you remember.

Although, dear,

your pronunciation

is atrocious.  Well,

I could try it in

Spanish

and would then

butcher words

bilingually.

To which you say,

as you do, That’s

all right, I’ll take

your hand in

whatever word you

misapply.

To which I might

sigh in what I’m

sure is unearned

satisfaction.

We look at the day

of bughaw, our

language loyalty.

Observatory

Observatory

To the north

And maybe through

An ozone layer

They peer into

Convex-concave

Holes to note

In quiet, confident

Accented tones

Of practice

And of speech

Jupiter disappears

Then returns

Again to view

And while

Watching another

Galaxy, discoveries

Follow with small

Gasps

This is an age

Of receiving

Messages of

Broadcasts,

Messages of

Design—they

Transmit, and

Now we can look

And glimpse

Moments of

Creation

Circles

On a page

From one who

Owns the book

Kalinaw

Kalinaw

Onomatopoeia

Long-vowel

Sounds (with

Skip of an i in

Between),

K to begin

Consonant-

Firm,

L then

N to give

Brief space,

Ending in

W

Even of

Silence—simply

To look or

Use another

Sense—the

Word evokes

Feeling and

Presence

Believe

Words have

Power

They do

Find quiet

Say and enter

An utterance,

Door to a

Place

Inside

You’ll know

Lady

Lady

(3 July 2016)

Lady

You are constant

When our faith

Deserves to be

Questioned

Expressionless

Weighted with

Expression

The wisdom of

An age across two

Waters

We call you liberty

And claim it

For ourselves

You bear the burden

Of all our

Uncertainty:

You guard hope,

When our

Vision blurs

And we falter

Beacon-light

Into the world

For all to see

We must stand

Closer in aspiration,

Parallel with

What time-spent,

Respect, and

Insight might

Accrue

Side by side,

We must mean

Creed and reliance

In all we express

And realize

Gunita

Gunita

Remembrance

Until it might

Slip away,

Tripped not on

Forgetfulness

But rather

On the path to

Now

Then matters

Again,

A crystal

Record;

But while you

And I are here

Memory is

Present for the

Present

Even if we

Stumble over

Nostalgia

In our steps to

The sweetness of

This time

Bread and Stone

Bread and Stone

All that’s left

Is the heel of the

Rye bread loaf

And a small pile of

Caraway seeds

(Inside) made

When I lift

The bag

Bread and bitter herbs

I could be

A Celtic sin-eater

A job from long ago

In smaller, well-defined

Communities—and

For their sake

The task has left us,

While the cause

For eating and then

Running out the

One fed

Remains

Bitterness

Of sin—perhaps

Given the time

And hard hearts—

We

Should tear off

A bit of bread

To take with

Zealous spice
