Mouse Culture
Mouse droppings
Signs of mice
They are old evidence
Except inside the walls, I’m sure
Where they congress
To meet upon important
Mouse subjects
Toward mouse culture
The latest look in traps
Especially the smells
Of things
I’m not talking rats
I believe their meetings grim
Volleys of hissing, punctuating
I mean gray mice
With small dark eyes
The kind of mice we’d rather meet
In fields
And in which
They’d rather find us
Meeting’s over
Crumb patrol, move out

They must have some kind of organisation, not with the intention of invading but to pass on findings about where there’s a loose-fitting lid, a door left ajar, a cat…Since they always look in the same places, I assume there’s a plan of campaign.

Yes, I think somehow they get the word around. I believe you’re right about their lack of interest in invading. They’re not sentiently nefarious. They’re busy being mice.

I hate killing them. In fact, I don’t. We have mice here despite the cats. They live in the barn and get into the kitchen through the innumerable holes. We shook one of the cats when she caught one until she dropped it. Silly really. It fought back though, screamed and nipped her when she tried to retrieve it.

I had one mouse who used to come to call. I didn’t tell anyone in the building. I had a cat who used to bring me pieces of rodentia. One day she brought back an entire mole, still alive. I guess she thought it would be a snack for later. I boxed the mole and put it back outside. My cat was upset; she didn’t understand.
