Good Earth

x

I don’t know the news now

I’m writing

x

I know what I knew

Last night

x

You know

Film at eleven

x

And reading much

Throughout the day

x

And having it

Affect me

x

I filter

And am changed

x

Maybe the filters change

Certainly

x

What settles on the other side

Has changed

x

The other side

Do you let the world

x

Affect you

This way

x

Everything impresses

As parents

x

Imprint

Upon the infants

x

We can only hope

They’re good

x

It’s all good

The process

x

And the people

On which rests

x

The fate of our

Good Earth

Seedling Truth

x

Tuesday

Time for devotion

Because there’s no

Holy reason telling us

To do so

x

We heard

And we hear

Sermons to the birds

And they rejoin

x

Bible studies

With the ocean

Ascensions at the mountain top

And then come down

To the veiled valley

Below

Most of us inhabit

x

Where we must live

Until our gospel says

It’s time

x

Our seasons tell us

Heat gives way to color

Then succumbing cool

To cold

x

We rest

And now it’s time

To rest

Until we all come back

Green blades

Rising

Songs’ abiding promises

To spring

Remaining

Up here

Circling

Until your gospel says

Forever

Oracle

x

x

Pent-Up

x

I wish the chemicals

Flowed more freely

Is it that they pass through

Glands

And mine rest in the body

Without balance

x

I was calm

And then adrenaline released

Caused me to jump

Around

You know

Inside

x

And now I contemplate my day

And its appointments

And could do without

The set-to

Consideration the expectations

Guessing really

Going on

Inside

x

x

Better Living

x

I never experimented

Never toked

Never smoked a cigarette

Never tried

What came within

The colored patches

x

Now a grown-up

I get pills

I know the younger

Get them

Too

And apologize

x

Prognosis

And prescriptions

It is the way

Buter’s way for our flesh

With what imposes

From the testament

About

Three-score and seven

x

x

That’s All

x

But

Lord

There are all the

Hundreds of years

Of patriarchs

Of Eve

Of Sarah

The subsumption of

Enoch

Elijah

x

Too many dying young

Through

Murder

Flood

And war

And then

The many who exceed

The formula

Citing classic wisdom

x

How long shall you go

(that’s you)

Or I

Our pets

Our people

Or our nations

Chronology

x

We might play with time

In elevated ways

Einstein

Velocity

The vehicles to get there

And such

x

Slows down things

Perhaps

While we are fast

And yet the direction’s

Always forward

Because that’s how the story plays

And toward which

The ending rests

And waits

Arborism

x

What will God tell us

To do good

x

Well, to do good

x

What if we’re feeling

Old and sick

x

And virtue

Seems too hard

x

After surgery and all

Or simply years

Of needing the investment

To get by

x

I don’t want excuses

Or to have them

Excused

I want resources

Energy

And time

x

Great things to consider

Though not so much when

We have them

We complain

We grow complacent

We choose bored

x

We all have something

For the whining

A tonic

Say

Say

Reality

Sometimes admittedly

A herculean lifting

Of a desert screen or

Something we believe

Might be on

Fire

To keep it there

Like Atlas with the world

Or the elephant upon

The wheel

Upon the turtle

x

Balancing

Then yes

With risk

Reaching under

That heavy

Skim

Detritus and illusion

To deal in the truth

To clear the roots

Spruce up

Our perception

Look at

What’s holding up

The holding up

And what is healthy

What needs

Pruning

What needs sliding off the top

For good

x

Maybe we leave the balance

Then

Clear roots

Above which

Sits our world

Our own

If there is something

x

A little easier

Or at least more visible

Atlas might not shrug so much

But smile

(the turtle, too)

do we love these people?

yes, we do

each one

every one

you have made it this far

now let us go with you

in everything

all circumstances

light and shadow

as God is there

we commit

to be there, too

our prayers and meditations

Join

(x = space)

x

x

Join

x

The way a building

Comes together

With everything that fastens

Nails

Glue

Screws and bolts

Certain guns and drills

That drive

The music

And a harmony

Until

Complete

x

I don’t mean

Cathedrals built

To music

Who knows about that

x

I mean the real noises

We provide

The voices of machines

With our own

Collaborations

x

Metaphor

Or three-

Dimensional

The houses goes up

The people

Or some others

If it’s a shelter for

Some animals

Live

Inside

x

There is a game

With fingers playing nicely

That emblemize

A steeple

When inside the church

The people

x

Join

In building

All good ways

To shelter

All creation

Needing cover

I thought about the title

first

title of a play

before that

something scriptural

x

three to five acts

the sphinx’s riddle gives us

four

x

there are tickets

paid

throughout mortality

the kind that

with a kind of magic

should become

the summons

of a claim

on erosion

loss of property

with less

with which

to pay

for greater need

x

but who

will be our advocate

who

will pay

x

there is no way

in this

unless history

plus the present

and guesses toward the future

should break

for a while

then reassembled

with adhesion

in the blood

of reconciliation

fleshly

otherwise

A Simple Faith

(x = space)

x

x

A Simple Faith

x

A simple faith

That says

I love you

God

I know that you

Love me

x

Help me

To love the world

You made

The child you gave

To save it

Keep me

Not giving in

Except to you

In faith

x

Let goodness

Not be slight

Or slighted

Not by me

x

Help me to love

My family

And friends

And stranger I have yet

To meet

Or never shall

x

Pearls

And swine

Doves

And serpents

Not to cast with

Or to invoke

But to be reminded

Of my worth

x

You are God

Deserving all that

God is due

But I must take you

Day by day

It seems

To love you best

Your world

To my listening ear

And the people

Here

x

While we are here

‘Til there

Everyone and Everything

(x = space)

x

x

Everyone and Everything

x

Our God

Our God

Why do we forsake you?

x

Well,

We can’t see you

That doesn’t help

We have great stories

They’re not ours

We can imagine heaven

Get it wrong

We have you

Because we say so?

Not to invent you

But to have you

Nothing required

But a choice

No initiation

Though we have written rituals

And applied water

And

A party

(and why not)

x

Then there’s

Metanoia

The changed life

That could cost

Something of mortality

What we think we want

And really want

Again

To have for taking

Like the food

Upon the table

That is

For everyone

x

New life

That dresses like the old one

Sounds the same

Tastes different

Taste and see

The Lord is good

We do not eat the Lord

But consume

All the same

x

We may break

With ingestion

Live on our own

And what we think is food

Is good

(usually, we know)

Molecules to eat

In such a way

To threaten finite balance

In the universe

x

Yes, sometimes

We are that important

x

Back to God

Or forward

Mostly forward

Though repentance

Is kairotic

One day into another

Until the day is perfect

With

Perfect night

x

Questions are important

Doubt is part

Faith isn’t stupid

Isn’t tricky, either

Have it

Eat it

Live it

If you want

x

Then ready for the world

(as is)

With, as we say

Or someone says,

Truth and understanding

x

An amen

Without the end
