The Mystery of Richard Bruce

I think it’s Saturday

The twenty-eighth

I’m

I don’t

Really have to know

The sun is bright

Through filmy

(rented)

Windows

And on the dusty

Hardwood floor

(I can take

care of that)

And, well, he’s gone

Meeting God so closely

In ways we only

Imagine

And how much we do imagine

Is in the books

How much we want

To know

He was suffering

That’s over

I’m glad for that

Though catharsis should not be

The main reward

They know what to do

The professionals

My sister says

They’re really good people

Plus they know their jobs

The government

Has funded a good deal

Of everything that’s happened

Our tax dollars working

Is there one administration

Or another

To approve?

The family,

We talk with each other

And our friends

There won’t be a service

He made that clear

He approved a wake

An experience of drinking

And appreciation

Since we tend to be

Micks and Scots

And even if we weren’t

This gathering appeals

My sister

And her crew

(my brother-in-law and

nephew)

Had done so much already

The burden for

Being there

I guess I can relate

There was a lease

Apartment filled with furniture

A car

All the bureaucracy

That places our lives

In containment

Then the boxes must be emptied

When it’s time

There should be more

There must be more

There is

There is an end to pain

And remembrance

That’s on us

I’m trying to recall

His sense of humor

It will return

His last days might have

Been sullen

Save for staff

And asserting to my sister

He did not want

To be there

Though there was too much

To do

To allow for decent care

Anywhere else

Too much immobility

Too much medication

There are degrees

I understand

I made such decisions years ago

And do not like it

When there should be more

x

We’re down

To four now

In the immediacy

Of things

The math is weird

The hole

It feels substantial

Holes should have no feelings

Gaps are an absence,

After all

My feelings are dry and sad

Like edging on a desert

Upon waking

Or simply turning around

I want to feel grown-up

And I do

It is the wake that follows

A wave anticipated

Always a surprise

She’ll have the family in

One more burden

Though I think everyone

Will try to behave

(not a pub, you

know,

though even there)

We’ll ponder mysteries

Though I doubt

We’ll talk about them

Memories might be easier

We’ll look for something positive

Or funny

Or strange

He took off once

And I have no idea

What transpired

I was a child

I guess I wasn’t allowed

To know

My older brother Rick died on Thursday night. He died as if he were asleep, and I suppose he was. His last insistances were not to have a service and to have his ashes scattered (not held onto). A wake was approved.

God of my thoughts,

You guide me

As I’m open

You fill the vessel

Pour it right

Not that there aren’t miracles

There are

You guide me

When I refuse to guide myself

It is the other side of faith

The pledge we made

A while ago

You can guide the pain that’s there,

Which is good when I am

Overwhelmed

Help me, Lord

I’m tired

I don’t know what I am doing

What a good time

For an angel to intrude

There is pain

You can use it

With the rest of me

All yours

Poor Evangelist

x

x

Poor Evangelist

x

I am a Christian

x

I hope anyone who

Needs to know

For good or ill

Knows that

x

The things is

I don’t mind if you are not

x

In fact, if you are from

Another faith

I’ll find that interesting

And want

To know

Something of your story

x

It’s bad evangelism

I know

And I’ll be glad

Typically

To tell you more about my faith

x

But I am entrenched

(without the trenches)

With respect

x

I want

To respect your tradition

Or your lack of one

Or somewhere in between

x

I think this is what we need

In the world just now

x

With respect,

We might withhold our fingers

From the buttons

x

We might shut up our cant

Or rant

Instead to listen

x

Stories are personal

And of a people

x

After and while happening,

Most stories deserve

To be heard

x

Shut down the hate

To hear

And have your circle of perspective

And acceptance widened

x

Hope to be treated

The same way

And that the Earth will hold

Together

From our destructive devices

Not only military

While we listen

And by impulse,

The way we are constructed,

Learn

x

To say

To welcome

And to hear

What might God say

But that

There was a word

The word in fact

Was God

And in our words

God breathes

And the making of the Earth

Was God’s

And our keeping

Or rejecting

Is our own

x

This from opening

The gospel

Pick a book of books

For all the horror

The unmaking

The possessing

And abandoning

Of spirits

We say good news

Inhabits

And abounds

Hope for ourselves

The grownups

And the children

Hope for the world

Of people

And of ground and water

x

For in the beginning

Was a word

Beside all words

It was love

And inspiration

Breath of God

And God

A word that made

From nothing

Gave us

Everything

With the proviso of

Two trees

And one rule

x

So much for that

We’re here as are here

There is hope left

In the box

Made of word perhaps

And this its second purpose

x

So many stories

Now

For elucidation

And companionship

Upon the journey

In the other way

From a detail of

A flaming sentinel

An ersatz beacon

Showing us

The way

We may not go

A Prayer for Running Fast

(x = space)

x

A Prayer for Running Fast

x

God,

Keep us this day

A helicopter crash in Ukraine

Kills civilians

But then it is a war at home

Battlefields lost their discretion

Long ago

x

There are fires

In my area

With human loss

And then materials

House fires

Are fearful to contemplate

To see

To hear the testimony

On the news

Of loss

And victims

Who are hurt

Who die

Who die later on

Because house fires have consequences

Changing life

After what happens now

x

There are changes

Some by force

We can blame nature

Or each other

The neighborhood beneath the bridge

Is ending

By the hands of institutions

Other hands will help

With the newly homeless

So that there will be

Breathing out

That problem resolved,

We’ll say for now

Then think about other things

Quickening

Our palates

x

So what do we care about?

What happens to ourselves

That’s natural

Our reaching toward

The plight

Or the good news

Of others

That is an instinct

From an impulse

God-given trait

Or capacity

We train

And practice

Like a discipline

Like any discipline

Run fast?

Care for others

x

Be a coach

Be a pal

You are sovereign

God of gods and

Lord of the self-styled lords

You are our king

Our queen

Allegiance

And tribute

Are ours to give

To pledge from our own knowing

And our gifting

And yet you’ll turn around

To teach us

And provide

x

It is a mystery

A frustrating mystery

Of labor

Sweat

And drops of blood

Each day

In all our stations

And yet we ask

In all our stations

Be with us

Start and close the day with us

Talk with us

Provide

Not as a tontine

Not as prophecy

But like love notes

Or neighbors come to coffee

And to be with us

When we stumble

Or when

Dear things

Dear lives

Must crash

Plane Crash in Nepal

x

preamble

And if you think of other planes

Dimensions, even

Torn and torn apart

I think you’re tragically

Correct

x

story

x

If you’ve ever seen

A landing in Nepal

(I saw one, recorded)

Then you saw

How steep

How brief

A perilous experience

Considered normal

Was there sudden wind

Inside the mountains

Of Himalaya?

Was there ennui

Among the pilots

Who got too used to doing this?

Was there worse

Or better

Doesn’t matter

To the loss of life

That’s final on this side

And for us

All the keening

And investigating

A place of peril

On a good day

This was not a good day

It was a horror

Out of normalcy

We like to think plane landings

Are ho-hum

Not a terror

The humdrum fabric

On the loom

Ripped apart

The frames of bodies

Broken

Flung and sung away

For furies

Or other agencies

Who mission is to surprise death

Out of our ordinary

x

This was ordinary

Leisure

Otherwise, uninteresting

Now the count

The cost

The loss

The news

Prayers lining up through ages

A horrible new age

Unending sorry

Ending

Beginning

Some kind of cycle no one

Wants to live through

And live through

The Holy Waiting

(x = space)

x

x

The Holy Waiting

x

Set apart

From regular life

The scheduled living

x

Try to hold

It’s hard

And often it slips through

x

God waits with us

I guess

I hope

There is no timely time

God’s good at that

We wonder

Should be try

Hospital food?

I mean, there are cafés

Maybe with better coffee

And no Jell-O

x

Should we eat?

Is it allowed?

Are we crass?

x

Pins and needles

Certainly, they’re here

And everywhere

Everywhere

We go

The familiar

That is strange now

We’ve never met

How are you?

x

Waiting means stopping

It also means serving

Those also serve

Who only stand and wait

Yeah,

That makes sense now

x

Understanding terminal

There is no

Understanding

Read a book

No, thanks

Climb a tree

Better

x

We stop

Until we move again

In steadiness

Or mysteries

Or steady

Or unsteady mysteries

A Day without Power

x

The plug on the computer broke

Last night

I had what was left of

The battery’s charge

I thought about what to do

Without the use the computer

To get a part for the computer

x

I live in a small town

There aren’t big signs saying

Fix Your Computer Here

But I call a friend

And with real words we discussed

The problem

x

He knows more than I

And so helped me make a list

Of non-electronic possibilities

I moved on one of these

Using the car

(not a mouse)

Going to a place with walls

Not firewalls

Looking people in the face

And telling my brief story

x

We found something universal

That could fit

My machine

I purchased the new thing

That wasn’t cheap

But a day without

Going into two days

Was not desirable

x

In the world,

There are better needs

And bigger

I didn’t lose electricity

And I’m not in a war zone

I am poor

But there’s help to get me food

When need be

And sometimes other things

x

I am sick

And usually tired

But am ambulatory

And have lots of pills

That help

And there are side effects,

Which mostly thanks to taxes

And my age

I can afford

x

I tend to think your needs

Must be greater than mine,

More real

And more pressing

But in my larger story

There was one decent passage

I can share with you now,

Hopefully to hear

Your story, too

x

The Power of Friendship

x

We’ve been through COVID

Got our shots

More or less retired

From our jobs

We both believe

And sometime have

Good conversations about faith

We share books

We don’t shop

Or take trips together

We might cheer on different teams

He has a house

(mortgage paid off recently)

He is married

Has three children

I’m forever the third wheel

x

We give rides for each other

When needed

For tests or procedures

He’s gotten me to hospitals

When necessary

And sat through

Unovertly

Through many times of waiting

x

There’s power in this

Unplanned

We simply met through the department

And it’s been many years

Untypical perhaps

Too academic

I think we both

Like the mind

But there is more

As there is more to people

And a complex world

x

The future will provide

There is no prophecy

Apart

We have our issues

And our challenges

Together

What David and Jonathan

Might define

Or Gertrude and Alice

Something in the ether

And before the TV

Watching movies (us three)

On Friday

We Say, We Believe

(x = space)

x

x

We Say, We Believe

(maybe it’s Revelation 23)

x

God is love

The metaphor

Reality

So much better than

God is gold

Even

God is power

Though God is both

The metaphor

Reality

x

God made the gold, at least

And also power

Power lent

To us

And in the Earth

Inherent

x

Borrowing

And legacy

That’s not our own

No matter how many times

We name another name

x

We do not last

Not on our own

And everything on Earth

That was our own

Is naught

So that when everything’s renewed

There will no monuments

Except the living

In a city

Where the temple

Is a person

And water is provided

That’s life-giving
