The circle won’t be broken

Let’s say again

Let’s sing again

Let’s dance again

Wonderful rings

That only break

To let someone in

Newcomers

Those returned

From the field

One kind or another

Outside there is potluck

Everyone bring

Something

While without doubt

Those without

Are so very, very welcome

Honey, too

x

You take my hand

And come along

All are welcome

Don’t worry about

That other thing for now

If you’re tired,

Rest first

Hungry, thirsty

Take care of that

We’ll be watching over you

Like angels from

The other song

Our circle is strong

We get the idea from the sun

And moon

And heaven

Heaven knows

x

God there

God here

Welcome, child

No, we do not care

About that

Come as you are

Heh-heh

Come eat

Come drink

Come dance

Epoch

(x = space)

x

x

Epoch

x

We have war

We have pandemic

We shoot each other

And we shoot

Our children

Children shooting

Children, too

x

These are the facts

When we believed

Ourselves good

In gray

And black and white

Were such

Things happening

As well?

Maybe

Maybe so

We did our best

To hide the war

In Korea

x

And our children

Were growing smart

Naturally asking

Questions

Our parents did not know

How to answer

x

Things began

To fall apart

The marriage rate

Fashions

Belief in government

And other agencies

Belief in church

x

Discovered were

All kinds of prisoners

Who wanted

To be free

It was a white world

It had to be injected

With more color

With more style

With more freedom

x

The war ended

Followed by

A worse one

We killed our youth

Did not fight well

And lost

The victories in the ‘80s

Took on an absurd

Significance

We conquered Grenada

The UK kept the

Falklands from

The mainland nation

We hid

From ourselves

What the CIA was doing

We were supposed

To believe

x

Not that the Soviets

Fared better

They lost in Afghanistan

And later

Lost the wall

x

So here we are

Not born

To be kings, as Queen

Asserts for

Highlanders

We’re simply here

And want our lives

And in relationships

And to trust our

Communities enough

Some buy guns

Or drugs

To have it so

Some lead hidden lives

That in the light

Of day could cope

Though illumination’s

Out of fashion

Left in the scriptoria

Of centuries ago

Or kept in colonies

In eastern Asia

Southern Asia

And there are monastics

Here and there

Not nearly so many

x

Secretly,

We praise our obfuscation

Slaps on the backs

For leadership

That will not abrogate

No way

Volunteer

Self-funded terms

Term-limited

x

And what is hidden

Behind doors

And what if the

Angels

Were assigned

To take all the doors

Away?

x

There is a planet

Though we

Melt the ice

Suffer in greater heat

Wondering what

Happened

To the media

Our hilltops long ago

Surrendered trees

To acid rain

Well, at least

Not so many

Rivers catch on fire

x

There is our place

In the cosmos,

The physicality

Social arrangements

Away from here

And maybe

On the way

Can you imagine?

What will we say

Our part has been

With regard

To respectability

Of suns and planets

And our

Sibling people?

x

Well, we’ll have to answer

Otherwise

Gort might have its way

Though if the visitors

Go unreined

Then we’ll have

New problems

x

We have a chance

It’s not last call

I’m not sure

Who calls that

In layers or in rounds

We might still

Have a say in that

But we’ll have to

Behave

Restrain and moderate

Practice then employ

The love we could have

For each other

Prayer Starting Day or Night

(x = space)

x

x

Prayer Starting Day or Night

x

God keep us

This day

Or night

Through everything

God keep the family

As families

Arranged or redesigned

But families

x

Teach and affirm

Our hopes

Our plans

If you speak to us

In dreams

As Joseph dreamed

And Joseph

The magi

Several saints

Then offer clarity as well

The humility

The dare

In hearing from you

And then acting

After

x

Who knows your will

But we must know

Your will

We have your words set down

Help us to study

To inform our prayers

Enlivening the prayers

That do not change

x

Lord, love us

Forgive us

Save us

And spirit us

So that

We might not be led into temptation

We might dwell with you

As is said

And offered

Invited

Forever

Hurry Up, Please, It’s Time

(x = space)

x

x

Hurry Up, Please, It’s Time

x

Time to pray

My God, you are here

Sometimes your presence

Seems so thin

Like vapor

In the morning

Then sometimes a

Numbered weight

Sometimes a fire

That frights

x

It’s how we imagine you

Though you are manifest

As you are manifest

Not invisible

Not hiding behind a tree

Awaiting human mischief

For a peak

You are not voyeurish

x

As it is, you’ve seen it

Heard it

Touched it all

Our antics are not of interest

Unless we should please you

x

That would be

A forest of content

With scenes of love and action

(love in action)

That would delight

In fact

And in fact

Of all the constituents

Of nature

And believers

x

Animals might pray

Might live in prayer

We must talk

Must confess

Must ask

Though, yes, we may

Keep it in the mind

Just behind

Or just inside our tongues

x

You hear us

Remarkably, some time

And every time,

Which is the miracle

The need

Even the requirement

To pray

For us to mutter something

You to hear

x

Sorry

Thanks

Love

Amen

Church Going

x

x

Church Going

(title from Philip Larkin)

x

Going to church

A dangerous occupation

Are they like paper victims,

Fluttering

Into the air

Like bulletins

After the bodies fall?

Are they easy pickings

Guns kept in holsters

Where allowed

Or left at the back

It’s church, after all

We keep our eyes closed

x

It happened in Georgia, Texas

Pennsylvania

(Tree of Life)

Now Nigeria

Over fifty died at mass

(defining now

the awful idiom)

x

Did they die for faith

Or were they easy targets

For a coward?

A criminal?

A terrorist

A war?

Cowardice

To take on

A kneeling congregation of

Faith’s children

x

Who knows

There might be justice afterward

Selah

Amen

Briefly, the Apocalypse

(x = space)

x

x

Briefly, the Apocalypse

x

The circle won’t be broken

Angels will hold

The breaking places

‘Til we get there

x

We’ll keep the world together

Until an ending that is proper

Appropriate for

New heaven and

New Earth

Table Round or What Have You

(x = space)

x

x

Table Round or What Have You

x

Something spiritual

Reminding us

That with us

Is the source

Of virtue

x

The old word for truth and value

Code of conduct

Worthy sometimes

Of self-sacrifice

x

Something good

Something clear

To understand and act

(transact)

x

A circle of faith

And goodness

Not for a holy grail,

Certainly not

For slaying dragons

Leaving them to fly above

Their homes

Or lie inside

In distant mountains

x

We have things to go for here

In valley lives,

Humanly quests

To help without romance

To dive in where it’s poor

Unthreaded

Trashed

x

And so to save the world;

Chivalrous

Or ill-mannered

Trying

(or trying)

Doesn’t matter

Stained/Strained Glass

(x = space)

x

x

Stained/Strained Glass

x

O God,

We believe

Variously

x

Most of the world

(mid- to upper-nineties)

Believe in you

Some way

Somehow

x

I know what

I must believe

But am loath (to use

an antique word)

To insist

That the next one

Must believe as I

x

I’d rather have respect

For belief, lack of belief

And for us meeting

Anyway,

This way

Transacting with each other

And the Earth

x

Bad evangelism, maybe

For us all to meet

With friendship and respect

(as if meeting

friendship and respect

as angels met in

Baucis and Philemon)

To realize

Humanity

Alive on Earth

x

Withholding conscripted hands

By the switch

That only proves

Annihilation

x

So we learn

And maybe for petition,

Maybe gently pushing us

To places where people

Of Earth

Believe otherly

Or don’t believe

But worthy

On both sides

All sides

All around

x

And welcome

To the table

Of the Earth

Amen

Robb Elementary School, After

x

Irony of welcome

We know this

You are welcome now

Not your guns

Not your murderous intent

You may have a troubled mind

And still come in

There are counselors

In school and life

But really you should come here

For a reason

That not only fits the mission

But also the constituency

x

Parents of our learners

Patrons of

Our special programs

Library volunteers

Or other signed-up, cleared

Helpers

We want our school

To be good

We want to welcome you

Bienvenidos

x

x

Outside, underneath the name Robb Elementary School, there is a greeting, Bienvenidos.  Welcome to our school.
