Death and Saint Patrick’s Day

(17 March 2022)

x

There has been

A death in the family

We will gather tonight

It might seem

As a wake

Though really it’s for comfort

Something pleasant

In all the difficulty

x

Which is maybe what

A wake is

Why the Irish developed

The remembrance

Bittersweet

Like coffee with sugar

Porter in a glass

x

Though the glasses

Won’t be broken

Ritually,

It might feel like a christening

Launching a spirit

Into heaven

While

Our part in having something

Unofficially good to do

x

Goodbye

Farewell

Fair winds, as sailors

From many nations say,

And following seas

Virtually a Sunday

x

I pulled on a shirt for church

Only to have technology

Fail me

Or I fail it, more likely

Virtual church

I should walk down the street

Through wide doors

Greet people

Sit down upon the wooden and worn

Bench

Await the start of something formal

Or walk

And keep walking

Chill and sunshine

And have church that way

x

Pray as I go

There are things I want

To pray for:

My brother’s health

Cancer

My nephew’s healing

COVID

My neighbor’s heart condition

Another neighbor’s children

COVID in the world

(cancer, too)

The horrid war in Ukraine

War in other places

Where it’s horrid

(always horrid)

Yemen, Myanmar, Sudan

Or violence undeclared

Peace thwarted

x

For food for everyone

Safe water

Safe living

I guess I can pray all these things

While walking

Pausing for crosswalks

Maybe I prayed for them now

God, help

The people of Ukraine

And the Russians who

Protest the war

And are arrested

By autocracy

x

Brave days for faith

And hope

And love

Amen

Everything Is Listening

(x = space)

x

x

Everything Is Listening

x

It is a fallen world:

Fallen people,

Fallen nature,

Maybe primal good

As in

Genesis

Until the fruit is eaten

Then everything is

Changed

x

What kind of universe

Allows such a fall

From the marrow

To the skin

And in the air

The slough above the skin?

x

A universe that’s made

With allowance

From its maker

x

Everything made

Real

With real alternatives,

Real consequences

x

Real joy

x

Real loss

x

The chance for one thing

Or the other;

Chance matters

Choice matters more

x

What we choose

Moves the Earth,

Maybe heaven

A little

x

Heaven malleable enough

For a third

To fall away,

The Earth more so

Affected by our choices

Mortal

Inside mortality

x

Save the Earth,

Save each other:

This can be done

With faith

And better choices

After faith

x

We believe—help

Our unbelief

x

What shall we say?

What shall we do?

How shall we live?

x

We are fallen;

Our choices mingle

With the dust

Of ages;

We have an age,

This age

x

We have flaws

x

We have hope

x

We know a better way

x

The prophets and the angels

Tell us

Of repentance

And good news

About Some Light

About Some Light

x

It’s dark:

Light a candle

(It can be electric)

To know the darkness

In relationship,

Which is the way to know

Nearly all

Good things

x

Knowing things

In relationship

(well,)

It can be electric,

Maybe a shock

But mostly learning,

Reflecting (hah) on

Brighter

(darker)

Currents through

Creation

On the First Day

x

x

On the First Day

x

It’s Sunday

The day Al Roker

Announces in

An echo chamber

I’m not sure why

Maybe his mother

Told him to

Maybe because

It’s game day

I’ll have church

In a little while

Service and Sunday

School in a virtual

(and, yes,

hopefully virtuous)

Way

And the day will continue

We’re expecting snow

In the afternoon,

Over night into

Monday morning,

Which could make

The commute

A mess

De Profundis

(out of the depths)

x

I don’t know why

I feel so sad today

x

The noise above

The coming storm

x

I got some sleep

Am I more aware?

x

It’s Saturday

A day to play

x

Yet I feel leaden

Weighed down with weights

x

The kind that keep us

Sleep at the bottom

x

The sea will take her dead

And raise up at the last day

x

God will reach

Inside the water

x

Pull us up, untie the wraps

The weights will have meant nothing

x

The heavy life

Be done

x

A life with gravity

A dancing partner now

פתק דחוף בין אבני הכותל: אל נקודתיים תן/תני לי, בבקשה, לחיות בחושים ולא במחשבה תודה. נ.ב. לא דחוף = “O Lord, hear my voice” Psalm 130:2 Notes to God at the Western Wall, Jerusalem Jerusalem

God give us

Something that we need

Who knows

‘Cause sometimes we don’t know

Not that random prayer

Is specified

In codicils

Sometimes we are confused

Burgeoning with something

Maybe burdened down

The words are stuck

Specifics unrequested

The angel or the saint

Will have to figure it out

Then convey it

To the proper desk

In heaven’s agencies

So that in-box to out-box

Happens smoothly

The business booming

With clientele

Requests

Resources

And responses

So we may say

Can we get

Amens

fit for Eden

x

the egret spreads its wings

to the glory of God

its long neck and dagger beak

and claw will hunt

for Jesus’ sake

and in the spirit of the Lord

it will eat without thanks

all organs churning

in a Genesis of calling

and of impulse

the egret is its own sense of wonder

without apology

(either kind)

or gratitude

it because it is

because God made it so

then left it to the sky,

the water, and the land

a true denizen of Earth

the wonder and rightful holder of

first promises
