Humaling

Humaling

(n) extreme fondness

What might I say to this

Endearment

Should it be felt toward

Me

I would be without peer

Except by those

Extremely loved

Not only loved by God

But by creation’s

Offering

Those who can choose

To love—and have

Chosen me

Perfect love is cast,

And I will have mortal

Love while in this

Life

May this expand

‘Til those who love

Encompass everything

Without condition:

A globe of endearment

Now

And heaven here

Indak

Indak

Dance with me,

I want to be your partner

What shall it be?

What is danced

Under a Filipino

Moon,

Call it “Buwan” or

“Bulan”?

Something

Spanish or more

Ancient?  Or

Worked out

Today?

As long as we

Might touch

Dancing now,

Because as the

Orleans song

Is sung,

And love is all around

Maybe spouse-sun

Will dance, too,

Who might be

“Arawa”

In lore, married

With the moon

All nature dances

To (what is called

In many places)

The

Harmony of spheres

Earth turns

Sun smiles

Gravity collides

With magnetic

Fields

In joy of being a

Universe

Day ends, merges

With jazzy dusk

Ready to step

And slide under

The rhythm of

Choice selection

From a heavenly

Combo:

Night is falling,

And I am calling you:

Dance with me

Touch my hand

And, with me,

Glide

Dog

Maybe we invented

You, brought you

Inside

Wolves bark in

Packs for their own

Reasons—do you

Still know?

You are fur and teeth

And if we carve

Them down, you

Still have claws

In canine thinking

In taming you, we

Take ownership

When we don’t, we

Lie to you

And God and will

Need a better answer

Than Cain gave

For a sibling, also

Abandoned

But there can be

Love in what we do,

And you improve us

Family is larger,

Home fuller, our

Blood chemistry is

Better when we

Pet you

(Hence the virtue in

The name)

Our company for all

Friends, your

Impulses toward

Concern and toward

Protection

These guard us—

And there’s a human

Promise in what we

Owe you

Sitting on Cats

Sitting on Cats

My week’s occupation

Done with lack of grace

They look at me indifferently

As I feed and water, pet

And play, even attempt

To impose medicine

Within one’s tiny mouth

We make it through—I

Would not give myself a

Good grade for care, though

Not for lack of

Trying

They came to me and then

Stayed away: It’s only you;

Feed us, check the litter

Box,

And leave

But one day, despite ourselves,

I found each cat and got

Down

Eye-to-eye

Looking at one while

Scratching behind the

Ears (the cat’s) and simply

Lying on the floor

So we could see each other

For the second (though

Equal among firsts),

There was something close

By to play with (besides

My heart-strings) and, what

Do you know,

We played

I received an electronic

Missive telling me my

Service was done—now

True cat-caring can

Commence without me

With the right ones at home

Well, we had a heat wave,

Didn’t we—which might

Explicate in part

Royal lethargy

And, if asked again

(Depending on the report

Received by parents),

I’ll prostrate myself in

Service

To liege-lords ruling their

Split-level citadel

Now off to learn something

About post-modern dogs

Pagsamo

Pagsamo

Beggars can’t be choosers

If wishes were horses, then

Beggars would ride

Don’t look a gift-horse in

Its mouth

So we should beg for mouthy

Horses

And for wishes

I think I’ve begged, when I’ve

Been scared the most

I begged for life—I begged

For life with you

I begged more than once

For more than one

a word of such

a better pun

bughaw

bughaw

if I were Filipino

(and sometimes I

wish I were) or at

least Philippine-

adept,

I might look out

at a sky that still

surprises and say,

That is bughaw

of brightest, well,

bughaw.

And you might

say, next-to-me

Philippine friend,

That is so sweet

that you remember.

Although, dear,

your pronunciation

is atrocious.  Well,

I could try it in

Spanish

and would then

butcher words

bilingually.

To which you say,

as you do, That’s

all right, I’ll take

your hand in

whatever word you

misapply.

To which I might

sigh in what I’m

sure is unearned

satisfaction.

We look at the day

of bughaw, our

language loyalty.
