flew off the tree
a human form with wings
and
we cry out
and run away
and I think
I might
by the surprise and instinct that we keep
for
insects and for serpents
this was in England
where she has
finds
as a supernal Hundred Acre Wood
as
well as Neverland
so
named by Scotland’s Barrie
but Germany
or
Holland or
Russia of Baba Yaga
or Asia with the dragons there
and
doesn’t require a Saint
George
but all the stories
we might gather while we searching
or
when
we’re surprised
lands of
Anansi
or
the Raven for a character
both
natural and extreme
because we want so far
is how to take
the world
we want the magic
with
extreme imagination
to
be real

North American freedom
count
further back to Plymouth
to
Columbus
to Lief Erickson
and others still to discover since
not
everyone can leave a home behind
for
evidence
and Rome a thousand years
half as a more-honest
republic
with occasional tyrannies assigned
to lead
local forces against foes
then anything like dictatorship
resigns
returns to farming
and this isn’t
to describe usual elections but when
the weapons clash
blade
against sheld and armor
so close
the threat
as we don’t know these days
in
a supremacy
that’s voted in
in
order to remain
self-styled demagogues
who
aren’t so good at demagoguery and yet
we let them
in and
should know better
and
we do
we know that emperors have new clothes
and what the raiment’s made
of
while honest work’s unnoticed
and
there’s building only on
fragile clay
no virtue to congeal
without doubt
to fall
the school in heaven
philosophy must fail
as all analogies unravel
as
schools let out for life and though we must be something
on the inside
we
never are done deals
in spite of all the arguments
and heaven is philosophy
I guess
all done
and giving over
the last class
and
sorry
if you were otherwise so glad
never
to have to learn in rows again
and yet the brain
the mind
the learning
goes
goes on
this
side as well as maybe
and I think over
there
coz
at the zoo
I said
hi
cousin
to the monkey
simply to upset you
yet
I prize our species closeness with
the animals
and don’t know except
by adaptation
over
generations
evolution’s proven
and so our God is
God of
that
as with all creation miracles
and as for missing links between ourselves
and branched-off
primates
or
to have it that we are branches broken
from the tree
well
I wonder sometimes
if
the link is the intrusion of the Spirit
to move us on and especially
to
know
and to bear wisdom in the keeping
of the rest

[is it a sickbed or a healthy invitation and-or sometimes serving both aims?]
on the wall
cross on the wall
simple
bought before the closing of the store
and
there since I brought the last office
back
stands for simplicity
I guess
though mainly stands for itself
cross empty of crucifixion
though
mindful of crucifixion as
a static thing
might
nonetheless move
or so we think
even
to hear the cross
speak
to say
that he’s not here
but that
he was

easy awe
how frightened should we be of God
to know the power
that
nothing could hold against
so that a weapon of deception
is
the only choice
for devils
since nothing material
if owned
could
stand a chance as in pitching
God’s own
against
God’s own
and yet a God of love
who
waits for choosing
maybe
by still water
or in the troughs of war
or
by the bedside
when
the sickness is bad
or
with the victims of the drought
that
civil conflicts caused
or
because dry seasons happen
anyway
and that is power
too
and so to hate or love
or
frustrate the faith
for
everything that’s giving and that’s taking
God
who seems to have chosen for God
an invisible place
from which to offer presence
and so
the paradox of that
for faith
truth in the trees
or at
the hilltop where the sun has danced
and
thousands choose it is
the bright and
even painful
show
of God
show for
real
and for them proof enough to choose
and
now
for the rest
only with evidence unseen
and filtered through a dark glass
of our insight
at
best
and what we shall believe
while love even to forestall power
awaits

taste and see
taste anything
and
in the savor
or simply end of hunger
to know
that God is good
having
made all things for food and
us
that in relationship we might exist
and
when there is enough
to thrive
and not
to discount farming
or
cooking or anything by way of preparation
even the stance we take
the setting
for
a meal
a snack
a drink of water
what
have you
throughout everything to keep us alive
there is goodness
from
a good God
who
first made us that way
and
though fallen
we live and consume
and are nourished
then
to rise
and if it’s bread and wine
let
that be enough
to start

the pope’s concert
one channel carries
the global
event
it is a Christian event
that might keep certain folk from watching
and
especially
to hear
it is a global event that narrow sight
would turn and lead
away
those
whose walls pretended to be gold
and
thoroughness of wealth
also control
pretense to earthly power
and
should the devils weep except
to
know there is
such withholding by such willful ignorance
with great effort
never
to confront
the good

first actions
light and dark
become day and night
the spirit
moves the water
and
the land
yet maybe water first
because there is
so much of it
then the peaks allowed to rise
to bring the valleys
plains
and
deserts along
toward the unnamed sky
and all of this now
wait
for habitation and then
the incident
of naming
