what kind of day
what kind of day
to look outside
‘cause I can
see
there is sunlight
easy allowing colors and
shade
in relationship that’s agreeable
as if
sun and Earth had worked it out
in a process
before dawn
and this is today
with all
the hours ahead and for all the plans
or
maybe apprehensive with no plans
what shall happen like
the Spanish song
with
surprises along with what’s expected
founded on what’s ancient
and what’s yesterday
entering new
time
with what we have and are to bring even
to a table
to negotiate with each other
like the sun
over
what should change on Earth and what
remain
the same

say it’s dawn (I have trouble telling)
stand as it’s delivered
look at the yellow
paling
the blue
pasteling green branches look lighter
too
and if we’re waking take it easy
while impulsively receiving
everything that
happens
stand as may
as all the selections might
in
the paint-washed and more sensoral day

chimes
on its way to midnight
a new day
in which we don’t have to re-make everything
or anything
though there is a spirit of creation to
consider
maybe some things need refreshed
or added to with
zest
once we wake up
of course

Amnesiacal

It’s funny
How willing
I am
To start a new day
As if in part
I’m starting over
And I take the day well
The dawning
The rising
Making coffee
With whatever
Or nothing else
(cold water)
And the world comes in
In not so welcome ways
And I am here
Again
Struggling
With everything
Appreciating
Too
Some better things
And will the day progress
Or step back
Will the pains prevail
Or hope
I’ll be ahead somehow
By evening

for Hallowe’en

I don’t know
Have a pleasant day
And night
If in costume
Moving through the chilly air
Or swiping
The candy from the bowl
While warm inside
x
And if you don’t play
Don’t worry
You don’t have to
By conviction
Or convenience
There is no requirement
Keep the porch light
Off
x
And as for Devil’s Night
Or Mischief Night
That’s why the costumes
And the candy
Were invented
In this culture
Maybe yours
While the mischief
And the devil
They are petty crimes
With which
You should not have to deal
x
Enjoy the day
And night
By watching scary movies
Not too gross
And with a story
That might interest
x
Have some fun
If you will
Within the borders
Of what’s fun
Even
Many children know
That the childish fear
Today
Tonight
Is fun

After Evening Service
x
We could keep vigil
On toward midnight
When the new day is called
x
A horn might be too much
But inside the church
The organ might be released
To greet the day
Subdued for lateness of the hour
Wanting to be good neighbors
Give our hearts some quiet room
As well
x
I guess “midnight vigil” sounds
A quiet thing
To us
I’m sure in other lands
It does not go that way
There are noisy fanfares
Calls as announcement
Calls to prayer
Calls to say
(to play)
Even to shout
x
This is a new day
Of the Lord
And the Lord’s creations!

Odd Gratitude
The weight is in my eyes
Just over my lungs
Inside the muscles
Pressing on the bones
Everything moves, anyway
Fingers, hands
Knees stretch
I blink, swallow, turn my neck
To see what’s what
The day’s ahead, and I’m
Thankful
Surprised? Shouldn’t be
Life is nearly always worth it
And always, really
There’s torture in the world,
Which must challenge the price
To pay
But this is being tired
Really tired
And there’s pain
Though not enough
To wreck the odds
Of there being maybe many
Good things ahead
