The flowers

They are ending, I suppose

The ones of summer,

While chrysanthemums

Are having their time outside,

This time

Their time

And we pause and pause

Maybe because it’s raining

Or it’s cold for the first

Time in a while

I’m speaking to where I live,

Which is in eastern Pennsylvania

In the middle of the

MidAtlantic, USA

Wherever you might be,

It’s fall up north

And spring down south where

The flowers that are dying

Here would rather be

So that their color

And their smoother shapes

Might go on,

Though I imagine in a relentless season

There would be end to

Flowers, anyway

x

Here, the chrysanthemums

Shall have their way

For a while

Stuff of Life

Stuff of Life

I should say something about love

Because I know

Nothing special

You can read the book as well as I

Write in the margins

Receive advice from those

Who live it closer

It’s not a single set

There are swords as well as feathers

Lions and sheep

Living near each other off the page

In a vision manifest

Somewhere for real

For now, nature’s what it is

While we borrow from it flesh and blood and bone

Muscles protecting organs

That will work on and off for a while

Is there love in this?

I think so

Gifts of Earth

Set in motion long ago

With us, we with it, for a time

And we hope longer

An existentialist should have her way

This moment, this now

We can count on this

Live on it

Not for wages

But for the working of those organs

As the gift of now

Unbroken moment without contract

Though gratitude would be appropriate

And spices all the rest

Empty Container at Your Door

Empty Container at Your Door

I need something

Maybe you have it

Not a reason

I have reasons

Not a cup of sugar as

A metaphor

How about some spice?

Might you have

Oregano, bay leaf—

Or some mint leaves for

A julep or mojito?

Anything that might

Speak up of interest

Give the day some

Seasoning in either

Experiment or harmony

It’s in the words, I know

The texture on

The tongue and then

The taste

So that there is

An instant call to

Savor everything

Solid or liquid or

Flying through the air

Loose molecules

Like witches’ night

A moon-sailed sky

Fire circle then

Retreat to morning

Or spices like alchemy

Changing the substance of

The world

Adding some wealth

Unto those the

Crusted world deems

Undeserving

The surprise of a reaction

Ruining its surprise

With one of bright living

By those they wish

Forgotten

Some flavoring, please

Please make it real

Even for me

Especially for you

My friend is a ceramic artist and made this pitcher, which she is watering her herbs with. It’s beautiful to see art given a purpose.

Fall, fall

Then fall some more

It’s all right, it is the season

I guess all the seasons can be verbs,

Especially the quarter that is half a year

From now

Spring and fall

Fall then spring

This sounds all right

Pretty hopeful, really

Maybe there’s a joke in that,

See you in the spring

After you fall

Seasons that are seasoning

We spice our lives with them

muni-muni

muni-muni

a word of such

slow spice, we

say it twice

(sorry, maybe

a better pun

for English)

wondrous,

though, to have

a word unfolded

that in the

saying is its

process

savor the depth

of thinking

we can go

muni-muni

we enter a bell

to dive into

an ocean of

insight and

relation

we go deeper in

to move further on
