Riddle
(starts 1 February)
Brigid lit a candle near
A dark place in winter, where
The groundhog, drawn by
Light, emerged
Saw a black companion and
Never felt lonely again
In the south, she does this for the
Pagans
And in keystone Pennsylvania
There are black hats borne
On white men
Saint Philip likes the
Older men
Wishes for more color
Signs of spring we know
So by the end of second night
We have all the hints
And spring arrives no doubt
Without our help
And all the shaping of folklore
For the
Right time
Theirs and ours
Is near

I’m not very good at riddles,Christopher, but I enjoyed the poem a lot. Spring in both the spiritual way and spring as in Heaven. I do hope the Ground hog actually saw his shadow there (even if it is a superstitious practice) winter has sucked this year, lots of snow and cold. We should be used to it and thankful in some cases, as the snow means more moisture for farmers in rural areas. We also had reasonably mild winters for the past two years, so being spoiled now, everyone can’t wait for spring to to come early. Great poem/Riddle. I love the depth.

I on the other hand, love riddles and catchy non-serious poetry, although serious is more who I am. This one is especially wonderful (except for the pagan), moving smoothly from character to “Okay, next, please!”

Well, in the southern part of the world most of these customs are pagan in following. I like riddles, too. Years ago, I wrote a paper about the Anglo-Saxons’ use of riddling. Thank you for reading and responding!

Still have it? I would love to read it. What I did last night is not exactly an official paper it was just a whim. My residence is up in the mountains but officially the post office which is most of the town is Hesperus. So I looked up the Greek and Roman history and just wrote. Sometimes it is enjoyable not to stress over it but I doubt I’d get an A if it were a paper. Thanks for the reply.
